Fleetwood Sixty
Special Brougham
- Cadillac advertisement, Winter 1976
Orie Dobson, my late grandfather, was quite fond of the Cadillacs of the 1960s and 70s. He knew what he wanted - V-8 power, unmatched presence, unparalleled elegance. This 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham was the last of his cars - and the last of its kind. Subsequent models from Cadillac and elsewhere have been built in the spirit of this car and its forebears, yet their nods to economy and practicality have sabotaged the very nature of a "luxury car."
Fuel economy was not an issue when this car was designed, and the fact that its 231-inch length crippled salability in some cramped, urban overseas markets was equally moot. This 5200-pound, 8.2 liter V-8 powered behemoth is all about effortless cruising, the enjoyment of God's own suspension and assuming the spotlight regardless of the automotive company. It does these things today just as well as it did a quarter-century ago.
Thank you for coming. Enjoy the pictures, reminisce and remember when the standard equipment list on a "luxury car" included something that is nearly extinct today - sheer opulence.
