NBA Live 99EA chose to take Live in another direction. There was mixed results. NBA Live 98 had great options, great graphics and great sound, the thing missing was great gameplay. This year, Live tries to regain its strength that it once had in NBA Live 97. Pro's about NBA Live 99 There is one thing i have to say...Wow. Last year the guys looked cartoony and skinny and hardly the players we see in the NBA. This year they hit it right on the nail. Live used last year's graphic engine and slid in a little of the 97 graphics and new improved graphics to make the players look ultra real. The players look solid and 3-D, EA did a fabulous job with this. Everything, absoulutely everthing with the graphics was improved. The facial expressions are amazing! This guy, Traz Damji, is great. He uses that funk and jazz and incorportes it into Live perfectally. This music revs me up to play some hoops. These are great. The Players react to this happening in the game so well. Just like you see in the Live 99 movie, the graphics are great. One particular thing I saw that really impressed me was when I was doing the shootout with Pippen, and I kept missing shots. As I kept missing them, Pippen's face (which is turned to the cam on the split screen) got madder and more annoyed. Then, Sam Perkins came out, started missing shots, got angry, then started to swish about 10 in a row and he looked relaxed. One word: Tight. There are actual fouls in this game, no joke. No, I am serious. Really. The computer fouls you almost as often as players foul each other in real life. I am saying "THANK GOD" After last year's one foul a year mode. No, I'm actually serious there ARE FOULS! This is great!! The crowd cheers and boos at times, and sometimes it actually feels like you are in the game. I am REALLY impressed by this. But, I am yet to see what happens when someone hits a game winner.... Control is very accurate in NBA Live '99, everything reacts well to your touch. This year they added more fakes, like a pass fake, crossover fake and more... Its cool. Also, its hard to drive the lane...you lose the ball more frequently. This year also they added a great post up move, that actually works. (Fadeaways go in too! That is awesome) Kinda dull, but it give you more reality to your NBA season. Every year they add great dunks and take away great dunks, but this year all I have seen are good dunks! They are more "Jordanesque". The guys don't look like stick figures anymore, they actually have bulk like the rest of the NBA. There are more options, having to do with facial hair, birthdate and so on, its a great addition. A Little addition, but it adds more to the reality of the game, a big nessecity.
CONS This is a major dissapointment... I suppose we're gonna have to use the DEX drive for this, or we'll have to create our own guys. I dont care too much for announcers in sports games, but ones that I do enjoy hearing are Madden's, Gameday 98's, and NHL 98's and 99's. This guy in NBA Live 99 sounds like he's sportscasting a turtle race. I think I am going to turn him off.
Right now, that is truly what I see for the Cons...
