I was not given much hope by the doctors. They diagnosed me with lymphoma cancer in the advanced stage with less than one month to live. I could not believe it! I wondered if I would become a statistic. I fought back with the help of God. This is how it happened. |

Prayer was the key. Pastor William Bryan wrote to me saying, "Our gracious Lord has not told us to pray that he might mock us, so let us remember that both His promises and His power are manifested for His glory and our comfort. I'm sure we should be resigned to the will of God (even to death) if we are sure of His will. Until He indicates our sickness is unto death, however, surely He is pleased when we search our hearts and then take His promises literally. Certainly God doesn't encourage us to pray to mock us. God's answers come through the promises in His Word. As I examined my heart, I was reminded of the mid-life verse that I had claimed six months before I contracted cancer: "The Lord blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first." (Job 42:12) The Lord spoke to my heart, "Didn't I promise to bless your later life more than the first? I answered back, "Yes Lord, but how can I be blessed in later life? I'm dying!" At that moment it occurred to me - If the Lord gave me that verse, believe Him! That renewed my faith. Futher testing indicated lymphoma with less than a month to live if chemotherapy didn't work. Malignancy had spread throughout my lymphatic system. A tumor pressed on a nerve and paralyzed my left vocal cord. I could barely speak above a raspy whisper. A large tumor obstructed my left kidney. I was placed on a six month program of chemotherapy. After six months I had an appointment with my oncologist to receive the evaluation of a CAT Scan. Dr. Miller said, "This morning a group of doctors looked over your file. We all came to one conclusion. "You are a miracle!" My wife, Elaine and I left the hospital with a deep gratitude for the extended life to serve the Lord. God has blessed our later life with a ministry that has reached across the United States and Canada through my Coping With Cancer book. We have started support groups in homes, churches, community centers and hospitals and founded New Hope Ministries. Our motto is, "New Life and New Hope In The Healing Word of God For The Whole Person And The Whole Family". |
