PRAY FOR WHERE A SUPPORT GROUP IS NEEDED

  • CHURCH: Your Church can start a support group.

  • COMMUNITY CENTER: Reach your community through this means.

  • HOME:  Use the books in a neighborhood Bible study.

  • HOSPITAL: Meeting one evening a month will work wonders in hospitals.

 Step Three

N

LOCATE AND TALK WITH INTERESTED PEOPLE TO LEAD:
  • Begin by thinking of persons you know who have a heart for helping people.

  • Those who have coped with cancer or other chronic or life-threatening diseases  (Even caregivers can help).

  • Talk to nurses, hospital chaplains, hospital director of activities and community center directors. Have at least two or more persons lead the group.

Keys to Support Group Success

The Coping With Cancer book has been used successfully in support groups at hospitals, community centers, churches and in homes. Here are some of the principles that have proved effective.

  • When possible, begin by doctors using their influence to sell the hospital on this program.

  • Find at least two cancer survivors who can invest time to lead. (Doctors are too busy to lead and attend the meetings).

  • Leaders need to contact patients of time of meetings.

  • Leaders need to send monthly invitations, phone patients, keep track of them and their treatments.

  • Chaplains and nurses can make good leaders.

  • Need an outgoing couple to be greeters. Have a sign-up sheet for the next meeting.

"We have found Dr. John Packo's book, Coping With Cancer, to be most helpful. A one-year monthly study through this book has been a great encouragement to patients and we have noticed that, although some of the patients in the support group have died, the remaining patients have not become at all discouraged by this, which is most unusual in cancer support groups.  I attribute this to the book's using the promises found in the word of God and applying them in a relevant way to give encouragement, hope and even eternal life to the cancer patient."

review

Too often I've seen serious illness and its treatment devastate people. John Packo has battled terminal illness himself. With empathy and the heart of a pastor he shares practical advice and godly wisdom that will bring peace and joy to patients in the midst of their struggle. This book is a 'must read' for every person with a chronic or life-threatening disease."
