Evesham NJ Volunteer Police
Evesham NJ Volunteer Police
Prior to 1966, Evesham had a volunteer police force, on duty from 6PM to 6AM. As the population began to grow in the 1950's, part-time paid officers were added. NJ State Police patroled the Township during the day.
Below are photos from a 1962 Township publication showing the volunteer force (Police Reserves) and the part-time officers (Special Officers). The photos were taken in front of the old Cooper Estate at North Locust Ave. and Main Street in Marlton.
Evesham's "Special Officers" are shown above. These were the paid officers-from left Chief William Bradley, Sergeant Wilbur Ivins, Part-time patrolmen Webb Lingle and Robert McDaniels.
Evesham Township began to plan a full-time paid police force in the mid-1960's. This caused disapproval of the part-time officers and volunteers because of an age restriction of 30 years old would disqualify most of the men and there were objections to a requirement of taking competitive exams in order to continue their service. In protest Chief Bradley and Sgt. Ivins resigned, followed by all but five of the volunteers. The five remaining officers-Angelo Meglio, William Shuster, Louis Sees, Bruce Rogers and Arthur Nevitt-were promoted to part-time Patrolmen and given authorization to carry firearms.
Evesham's full-time police force went into operation in July, 1966. With this, three of the five remaining officers- Patrolmen Meglio, Sees and Rogers-joined the new force to assist the Chief and new Patrolmen, supplement night patrols and serve as dispatchers.
