All workshops involve hands-on participation. Students should have basic quiltmaking skills and knowledge of sewing machines. The book, MARINER'S COMPASS QUILTS: Setting a New Course published by C&T Publishing 2005 is not required for the workshop, but does describe the information offered.
MARINER'S COMPASS circle in center- 6 hours
Learn how to construct a traditional mariner's compass design,
selected according to students skill level using freezer paper
template or foundation methods. Begin with a short lesson on the
drafting principals behind radiating stars and includes the most
common variations. The project is a 15'" diameter star (pattern
provided) and students are encouraged to chose the variation suited
to their skill level. Discussion of color and fabric choices.
Most students are able to complete at least one-quarter of the
design in class (and many complete the whole star) which will
give them the basic information about this precision sewing technique
of stitching along the edge of perforated freezer paper foundations
or templates. Machine piecing only QNM 231, 297,325 and 326 Mariner's
