
This company was organized by William H. Bramblett, M.D., and it mustered in Confederate service in July 1861 in Grayson County probably at Independence.

Monday, October 28, 1861. John Dickenson, one of the commissioners appointed to purchase horses, saddles, bridles, etc., for the Grayson Cavalry this day returned his report to court, and the court doth order that the said John Dickenson do return the receipt taken from each and every person who received horses, bridles, saddles, etc., to cour at its next term.
Report returned February 3, 1862.

This unit was assigned to Albert Galatin Jenkins' Cavalry Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. This company was reorganized on April 27, 1862 at Crump's Bottom, West Virginia. Important engagements this unit was involved in were, the September 1862 Kanawha Valley Campaign, Gettysburg, East Tennessee in the fall of 1863, Jonesville, Virginia January 1864, Cloyd's Mountain in May 1864, Lynchburg, The March on Washington, Chambersburg, PA, Moorefield, WV, Third Winchester, Fisher's Hill and other cavalry fights of Early's Valley Campaign. Bramblett left this organization in 1862 and joined the 63rd Virginia Infantry as regimental surgeon.
It was assigned to Albert Gatlin Jenkins'-William Edumundson "Grumble" Jones' Brigade, for most of the war, in its various permutations until those commanders were killed at Cloyd's Mountain on May 9, 1864 and Piedmont on June 5, 1864 respectively. Brigadier General Bradley Johnson assumed command of this brigade, assigned to Lomax's Cavalry Division in the Valley District until he was relieved in the autumn of 1864. The final brigade commander was Brigadier General William H. F. Payne.
