K-9 Kris's Police Page

This page is dedicated to my retired police dog Kris who has since passed away in the later part of year 2004. K-9was thirteen, and retired a fully decorated German Shepherd police dog. Kris worked with me as my partner for approximately six years. He was imported from Germany and we went through our canine training together. Our first school was patrol school which was approximately 550-hours of vigorous training. (I have been through two SWAT schools in my twenty years of law enforcement, and this didn't hold a candle to my canine training schools).

K-9 Kris has made some outstanding busts in his six years working the streets of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Some of his highlights were catching an armed suspect who shot at SWAT officers, tracking down an armed cat burglar, finding 6-pounds of marijuana in a trunk of a car, and alerting on $36,375.00 US currency that was hidden in an SUV. He was a great partner, freind, and companion, I will miss him dearly!

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

ARMED AND DANGEROUS!

The date was January 5th, 1995 around 11:00 pm, and K-9 Kris and I were still in canine school with just weeks away from graduation. Our K-9 instructor received a call to respond to the Jupiter Farms area to assist SWAT with searching for an armed felon who had shot at the tactical response units when they attempted to serve a warrant and effect an arrest. The suspect had been pepper-sprayed and fled on foot still armed with a handgun. (ATF also had warrants for this same subject for federal firearms violations, and dealing in automatic machine guns).

We responded to the scene code three, with sixteen canine teams all in a row. It looked like a high speed parade as we arrived on scene and met with the SWAT commanders.

After being briefed all sixteen canine teams were given an area to search and a SWAT team member for their backup. I deployed k-9 Kris and started gridding an area west of the targets residence and I had a SWAT officer with me armed with a shotgun.

We had been searching around homes, fields, bushes, and wooded areas with no luck. After about two hours into the search canine Kris began to alert on a heavy bush area in the backyard of a resdence. As I moved into a position of cover along with the SWAT officer by my side, we both observed the suspect laying face down underneath the bushes with his hands hidden underneath his body. We yelled at the suspect to surrender and to show his hands, but he refused to come out, and I sent canine Kris into the bushes to make an apprehension.

While canine Kris was on the bite the suspect reached into his waistband for a gun and was then shot by the SWAT backup officer. The suspect immediately complied and was handcuffed, and we called for the medics to respond to tend to him. We recovered the suspects holster inside his undershorts, his gun had fallen out while he had been crawling around in the grass and was laying near him. He had thought it was still in the holster and had been trying to go for it when he was shot. The suspect lived and is still serving his time in prison for federal firearm charges and attempted murder on police officers.
