Definition:
- The iterative process of definition, design,
and development of a product family or related set of systems
- The part, of systems and software engineering, which:
- concentrates on general solutions
for families of systems in a "domain" or business area
- identifies and leverages commonalities
between multiple (past or future) systems having similar requirements and
capabilities
- identifies, characterizes, localizes, and
parameterizes differences between similar systems
- defines a plan for investing in common
architectures, components, life cycle work products, and other assets to
generate an acceptable cost savings, market share, or advantage in a specific business area
