Definition:
  • The iterative process of definition, design, and development of a product family or related set of systems
  • The part, of systems and software engineering, which:
    • concentrates on general solutions for families of systems in a "domain" or business area
    • identifies and leverages commonalities between multiple (past or future) systems having similar requirements and capabilities
    • identifies, characterizes, localizes, and parameterizes differences between similar systems
    • defines a plan for investing in common architectures, components, life cycle work products, and other assets to generate an acceptable cost savings, market share, or advantage in a specific business area
