The Kalin Twins - #2 of 6

This is The 2nd Floor of the Kalin Twins Building

.....

Words are very important in a library - and they are very important to a song as well. Here are the words to

"When"

When, When you smile
When you smile at me
Well, Well I know
our love will always be

When, When you kiss
When you kiss me right
I, I don't want
to ever say Goodnight

I need you, I want you near me
I love you, Yes I do and I hope you hear me

When, When I say
When I say be mine
If, If you will
I know all will be fine,
When will you be mine?

Welcome to The Library. It's always fun to remember "When." That's what nostalgia is all about. We're The Kalin Twins, Hal & Herb are our names and we've been making records since Way Back WHEN. ("When" is the title of our very first hit way back in 1958.) Here in The Library you can read our biography plus information about a new book we wrote. And below you can find out what Stephen King's "Christine" feels about us. Read on. Sincere Regards,The Kalin Twins

The Rolling Stones kindly acknowledged us in this poem by Andrew Oldham, on the back of their London LP, "Rolling Stones, More Hot Rocks, Big Hits & Fazed Cookies"

way back when / the sleepy owls of the brill building / brillcreamed and braincreamed that melody was coming back / and lo it had / it flew past their windows yesterday / as Paulie, a bebeatled ballade / Lennon's advocate for the Kalin Twins (who is the other jaggered half?) / seen so far away / and today will never come to the Judas Iscariots / who mock the hands that feed them / from here within / December's Children and the Aftermath of the war of the parking lots / stay away from new caddies, they're faulty / stick with our original edsel / the 17 + 8 / 8 from the brown cookie bag baked yesteryear and preserved and never before sold in your local deli / that remained (excuse me Mr. Gershwin, I need another dime) standards of yesterday and now / good times, bad times to you all and have you seen your mother baby, balling in the alley

The Official Bio

(Originally Released by Decca Records, 1958 - Updated 1999)

The Kalin Twins

Hal and Herb Kalin, who incidentally are really twins, were born and raised in Port Jervis, New York. They made their singing debut at age five, performing at a hometown firehouse banquet. The enthusiastic response from that first audience, a standing ovation, has been echoed through the years countless times the world over.

Success in school shows and later at local dances prompted the brothers to go on the road seeking fame and fortune. Overnight success in show business is rare however, and the twins were forced to "pay their dues" on the tough nightclub circuit for several years until they were eventually discovered by Decca Records in 1957. The label saw the great potential in the singing, songwriting look-a-likes, and signed the boys to a long term recording contract.

In1958 their first giant hit, the now classic "When", (Total worldwide sales: Over Three Million) catapulted The Kalin Twins to international stardom. Who would have thought that someday that little firehouse duo would find its way to Number One on The Hit Parade, be featured in Life Magazine, and appear regularly on coast-to-coast television shows such as Dick Clark's American Bandstand, The Merv Griffin Show and The Ed Sullivan Show.

A string of hit records and sell-out tours told the world that The Kalin Twins had arrived. For the next several years Hal and Herb, now members of the All-Time Million Seller Hall of Fame, kept up the hectic pace and toured the world several times over, performing in major concert halls and theaters including a memorable appearance at the famed London Palladium. Recently they were asked to return to England to appear at Wembley Stadium with Cliff Richard. They created a sensational nightclub show, the "Remember When" Review, a combination of their sense of humor, mimicry and natural musical abilities. This sucessful nostalgic act has been hailed by critics as one of the best in the business.

Their two part harmony and unique blend has had a permanent effect on the evolution of music, as the next generation of stars, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles among them, credited the Kalin Twins sound with having influenced their careers. The Rolling Stones paid tribute to the Kalins on one of their LPs. Paul McCartney made a point to come see The Kalin Twins perform when they appeared in Liverpool.

Even today The Kalin Twins, now seasoned performers, appear regularly in nightclubs, concerts and television, and still they leave a lasting impression - two brothers, taking that extra bow to a standing ovation. .

Now you just KNOW this Fifties Soccer Mom wouldn't lie.
Now you just KNOW this Fifties Soccer Mom wouldn't lie.

A Word about the book from Herb and Hal

A SMASH IN THE CAN

Our new book is all about trying to "make it" and trying to keep it "made in the shade" (Haven't heard that one lately have you?) in the music business in the fifties and beyond. We feel a short explanation of the book's title "A Smash In The Can" is in order.

In the record business when an artist has recorded a song it is kept on a reel of tape which is placed "in the can" (literally in a metal tape can) to await release. When things are not going too well, when record sales have dropped off and the artist is in need of another "hit" to give their career a boost, they often remember a particular song that they recorded but which has not yet been released for one reason or another. "Don't worry," they tell themselves and their agent as well, "We've got a smash in the can. Just wait till they release it and we'll be on top again."

While we were doing research for the book that particular image kept coming to the fore. We had certainly had those feelings on many occasions when we pondered whether we should give it all up or keep plodding on. At what point does the average "semi-star" quit the biz. Our solution has been to "semi-retire". We still take an occasional booking primarily just to keep the dream alive. (If one of us is only half of a semi-star and we are semi-retired does that mean when you meet one of us you are really only seeing an eighth of what might have been if only that last record had REALLY been a smash instead of the lousy bomb it was?) But we're still optimistic. Maybe this book will be our "smash in the can."

The book is as honest as we could make it. It is sometimes sad, sometimes revealing and hopefully funny at times. (Yes, we've been kicked in the can too.) We think the book is witty, pithy and gay. Well, maybe not gay. C'mon people, you can do it. All you have to do is buy one copy each and it would mean so much to two wonderful guys. (How many opportunities do you get in life to really make a difference?)

P.S. The book is scheduled to be released in January 2000. Now that's a perfect time to release a new book. That way you can avoid all those pesty Christmas shoppers who might buy your book had it been released in December. (I think we're going to have a long talk with our publisher. Maybe he needs a "Smash in the Can.")

Oh! That Christine. She'll drive you up a wall!

A Great Book and Movie
A Great Book and Movie

Stephen King wrote a bestseller called "Christine", a story of a car named Christine that refused to stop playing Oldies records on her radio. The book was made into a blockbuster top movie bringing to life the cantankerous Christine. The part of the book we liked best was whenever it rained Christine's windshield wipers beat time to, you guessed it - our record of "When."
