Co-founders, Ron and Karen Meier, have learned many things since their son Steven was born. Many of the most helpful, useful, and positive "upside" things came in a haphazard and hard to find manner, and that wasn’t right! So, they formed The UpSide of Downs. The mission of UpSide of Downs is to help families get helpful and positive information early on and in a neat, little package. In addition to providing information, the UpSide of Downs contributes financially to scientific research into Down syndrome.

email: TNILA@aol.com

Mission: FRIENDS of Trisomy 21 Research, Inc. was founded by Julee Bramson, Linda Strobel and Julian Whitaker, M.D. Julee and Linda are both mothers of children with Down syndrome (DS), and Julian Whitaker is founder of the Whitaker Wellness Center in California. Our goals are to provide the necessary funding for research to further enhance the lives of people with DS. FRIENDS is also dedicated to the dissemination of information to ensure that parents and health care providers are informed of therapeutic options currently available. FRIENDS will further keep its members advised of any new finding which may hold promise for our children. Down syndrome is a condition which has been too long without hope of treatment. Through the efforts of Trisomy 21 Research Foundation and other institutions, that hope has been partially realized; but there is still much to be done. Together we can provide the resources needed to solve the puzzle of Down syndrome.

What makes these materials unique is the way letters/words are clearly presented to help children focus their attention. There are there parts to each learning kit. An audio tape works on vocalization and is played at naptime, bedtime or playtime and lets the child hear the words spoken in a clear, slow manner. A video tape repeats the same words visually and phonetically, again in a clear, focused presentation. Special books clearly present the same letters/words and, when used for just a few minutes each day, reinforce the audio and video tapes as well as provide a special time for parent and child to read together. Included on each video is a presentation on how to use this technique to best meet the individual needs of your child. The materials were originally developed with the infant/toddler in mind but can also be used in other situations.

Baby's First Impressions is a fun educational video designed to help infants and toddlers learn their educational basics (shapes, colors, letters, numbers, etc.) It's different than any other video, because it uses real objects and other children's faces that a child can relate to in his or her environment. It does not use computer animation or puppets, but rather simple objects that each child can understand in a fun and exciting way. This encourages interaction with your child, instead of being a passive viewer. As a result, this teaching technique ensures a solid learning connection with your child. Each video is 32 minutes in length and is professionally produced. Babies really LOVE this video! It holds their attention for the entire length and they absorb information quickly. It inspires and educates by using bright colors, familiar objects, positive music and soft reassuring voices. Each learning section of the video is followed by a fun, interactive "Play" section, where children learn by example. The videos repeat objects on the screen several times and it has a good balance of both objects and children's faces. This helps children to quickly absorb information, while they have hours of fun learning.
