My tribute to Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, one of the most brilliant men the world has ever known. I can remember when I was a kid my parents were watching Life is Worth Living on television. I don't recall how old I was at the time, probably five or six, but I remember I was hardly interested in listening to some guy wearing a funny looking cap on his head. I changed the channel and my dad, chomping on his cigar raised his left hand, bringing down on the arm of the chair with enough force to simulate a California earthquake, biting down hard on the cigar on the right side of his mouth saying in a crisp clear voice with the determination of a Marine Core Drill Instructor from the left side of his mouth, "That is Bishop Sheen! Turn it back and sit down now!" If you can remember your childhood and the feeling you got when you knew full well you crossed over the line and had one chance of escaping punishment, you can see in your minds right now what I must have looked like as I quickly turned the the television set back to Bishop Sheen. Being an obedient son, I watched Bishop Sheen teach. I cannot recall any particular shows, but I was intrigued with the "Angel" whom I never did get to see, and his blackboard. I think I spent more time looking around the Bishop trying to spot that Angel.
I remember when Bishop Sheen died, I felt remorse. I didn't know why at the time, but I did. It was not until I was well into my 30's and doing apologetics work that I came to know Bishop Sheen. Now, you want a humbling thought? I read many books by Hilaire Belloc, I make no dispute, he is the one I call my mentor. I have also read some of G.K. Chesterton's books. Many of the conclusions and findings I have made, I thought were my own original. Needless to say I was quite proud of them too. THEN...I read the autobiography of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, A Treasure in Clay. I absolutly LOVE that book!!! I found that I studied many of the same things Bishop Sheen had! Also the conclusions I figured out on my own that I had thought were "original" were not. Bishop Sheen had the same conclusions 40 years earlier! Well, what the heck, I felt proud that I was in good company.
I hope you take the time to read my class on Bishop Sheen Lesson 75, you will get a good thumb nail sketch of who he was and what he did. I dedicate this web Site to the Archbishop, whom many of us must be blessed for having been contempories with him, at least for a time.
Bishop Sheen remains with us in his books and videos. Read all you can about this brilliant Son of the Church and Pray for his Veneration, he truly deserves the title SERVANT OF GOD. My personal quote in my profile, yes it is true, I thought I had an original, is a quote by the Archbishop himself. I am proud to use it because it is true, The Catholic Church is the Greatest Treasure a human being can possess.
God love yas!
Tim

"All my sermons are prepared in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. As recreation is most pleasant and profitable in the sun, so homiletic creativity is best nourished before the Eucharist. The most brilliant ideas come from meeting God face to face. The Holy Spirit that presided at the Incarnation is the best atmosphere for illumination. Pope John Paul II keeps a small desk or writing pad near him whenever he is in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament; and I have done this all my life—I am sure for the same reason he does, because a lover always works better when the beloved is with him." -Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

"On Sunday, December 9, 1979, at 7:15 PM God called Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen to Himself by name...Dear Friend, Archbishop Sheen, we are all better because you were in our midst and were our friend. We trust you to the care of your "Lovely Lady dressed in blue." We pray that Jesus has already said: "I've heard My Mother speak of you."
Bye now, Fulton Sheen, and God Love You Forever!"
