Introduction


Caumsett State Park
is located at Lloyd's Neck in the Town of Huntington, New York.

In 1921, Marshall Field III bought a 1,750 acre estate and called the land by its
Matenecock Indian name
Caumsett.
meaning "place by a sharp rock"

Marshall was the grandson of the founder and publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times.

In 1922, the architect John Russell Pope was hired to advised Marshall on the design of the estate which had sport facilities for eferything but golf; and included, indoor and outdoor tennis, horseback riding, pheasant shooting, skeet-shooting, trout fishing, polo, swinmming and boating. A boat dock was built for Field's large steam yacht the Coursande and roads were built for motoring.

The estate had a complete dairy farm holding 80 head of cattle and was a fully self-contained community having its own water supply and electrical supply.

They farmed the land and grew their own vegetables and had firewood from the estate grounds' large woodlands.

Now, Causmsett State Park is administered by the State of New York's Office of Parks, recreation and Historic Preservation. The park provides the modern day recreational outing for all of us to enjoy, fishing on the Sound, nature photography, bird watching and use of its many roads for horseback riding, walking, hiking and biking.

The Marshall field House is leased by Queens College and the stable area is used by the Caumsett Equestrian Center (673-5533).

The Park is opened from 8 am to 6:30 pm daily. There is an entrance fee from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

  • Belt Parkway to Van Wyck Expressway north to Northern State Parkway east to Exit 40, Route 110 North, to Route 25A west to West Neck Road north
