KG4ERX Guide to Surplus Dealers

Or,

Where can I find it cheap?

Or sometimes,

Where Can I Find It (Period)?

Through my travels, newsgroup postings, and catalog file search, I have come up with the following listing. Those I have visited are indicated named in RED. Any input from those who have had recent contact with others is appreciated. The listings are by state and city. Many of these places have catalogs. web sites, or even Ebay auctions, but the most fun is in the visiting, as many things show up in front of you that don't show up in publication! SO, keeping with tradition, I invite you to visit and browse these dealers when you are visiting their areas.

The nature of the electronics surplus market has changed much the past several years. It got it's start right after WW-II, when Uncle Sam started releasing TONS of material that was no longer needed. Some of it was obsolete to military needs before the war was over, and some of it (like ARC-5 "command set" radio gear) remained in use well into the 60's, even though lots of it was available in surplus channels also (many Ham operators used command sets as their first rigs, and there is still quite a following today). Manhattan's "radio row" and many catalog firms such as Fair Radio Sales, Olson Electronics, Burstien-Applebee, Arcturus and others also benefited greatly from the letting of surplus gear. As far as I know, Fair Radio is the last of this line. For a nostailgic look at radio row, go to : http://sonicmemorial.org/public/radiorow/radiorow.html

Today, Uncle Sam tends to web auction surplus, and much of it is "de-miled" to the point of scrap before it is released. The past twenty years, most electronics surplus has been manufacturer over-run , over-buy, or "stranded" parts, left over from production model changes. Unfortunately for the Ham and electronic hobbyist, the majority of the US electronic manufacturing base has run across the lake to China and Taiwan. Some of that surplus is making its way into US marketing channels, but the supply isn't what it used to be.

The information on this site is updated when I have time (I have a job, too!) Although I am acquainted with several of the owners of dealers listed here, I have no relationship with any of them except as a customer from time to time. No guarantee is made (or implied) for anything!

They also have industrial surplus, commercial surplus, a wholesale division for electronics, and a sister company, Parts Express. You could spend the entire day here.

Has a showroom, catalog and web site. Not the place it was in the 60's and 70's as Uncle Sam doesn't generate as much surplus as he used to (and tends to "de-mill" anything useable these days). However, they are still receiving Govt and commercial material. Makes a good 1 or 2 hour rest stop as travelling I-75.

Has a web site, but a much more complete catalog. Some stuff in their showroom that doesn't appear in publication. If travelling to Wheeling or Pittsburgh, worth a couple hours side trip to nose around. Good mix of surplus and new production items

Missed my chance to stop buy when I was in Florida a couple of years ago. I hear it's another "electronic Disneyland". No paper catalog, and very little on their web site. It's a must see my next trip to the sunshine state.

From an email: "... having been there yesterday, I can tell you that Skycraft is better than ever! They did decide to remount the flying saucer a lot closer to the ground on a shorter tower after the last major hurricane. ;<) 73,

From an email:

They buy lots of surplus equipment and tear it down for piece parts and scrap metal. You can walk in and browse. Nothing is very organized although
resistors are generally in the same area, etc. They have some test equipment - it's very hit or miss but not too much very new (< 20 to 30 years old).

They do have an e-bay store at

Smiths Falls, Ontario Canada

W.J. Ford Surplus. - GONE!

From an email: ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ralph Cameron" Subject: [Milsurplus] German aircraft sets

I mentioned about 5 months ago that W.J.Ford Surplus sales in Smith Falls On( near Ottawa) was going out of business and an auction followed. There are still some German aircraft and tank radios as well as some British types. Next week a scrap dealer comes to quote on "removing" the balance remaining. His email is closed and not working .

Philadelphia, PA

Fertik Electronics is reported as being out of business.

Chicago, IL

Mid-America Company (Midamco) used to have a showroom on Archer Ave. Evolved into VANCO, a wholesale supplier of TV-Video-CB parts to distributors & Dealers. Don't know if they have a showroom still, and they may be wholesale only now.

Longwood, FL

Gemini Electronics is reported to be closed. Their old phone number has been re-assigned.

Boise ID

Hi-Tech Surplus seems to be out of business. Their web address is for sale and the last listed number belongs to a residence now.
