KG4ERX Guide to Surplus Dealers
Or,
Where can I find it cheap?
Or sometimes,
Where Can I Find It (Period)?
Through my travels, newsgroup postings, and catalog file search, I have come up with the following listing. Those I have visited are indicated named in
RED. Any input from those who have had recent contact with others is appreciated. The listings are by state and city. Many of these places have catalogs. web sites, or even Ebay auctions, but the most fun is in the visiting, as many things show up in front of you that don't show up in publication! SO, keeping with tradition, I invite you to visit and browse these dealers when you are visiting their areas. The nature of the electronics surplus market has changed much the past several years. It got it's start right after WW-II, when Uncle Sam started releasing TONS of material that was no longer needed. Some of it was obsolete to military needs before the war was over, and some of it (like ARC-5 "command set" radio gear) remained in use well into the 60's, even though lots of it was available in surplus channels also (many Ham operators used command sets as their first rigs, and there is still quite a following today). Manhattan's "radio row" and many catalog firms such as Fair Radio Sales, Olson Electronics, Burstien-Applebee, Arcturus and others also benefited greatly from the letting of surplus gear. As far as I know, Fair Radio is the last of this line. For a nostailgic look at radio row, go to :
http://sonicmemorial.org/public/radiorow/radiorow.htmlToday, Uncle Sam tends to web auction surplus, and much of it is "de-miled" to the point of scrap before it is released. The past twenty years, most electronics surplus has been manufacturer over-run , over-buy, or "stranded" parts, left over from production model changes. Unfortunately for the Ham and electronic hobbyist, the majority of the US electronic manufacturing base has run across the lake to China and Taiwan. Some of that surplus is making its way into US marketing channels, but the supply isn't what it used to be.
The information on this site is updated when I have time (I have a job, too!) Although I am acquainted with several of the owners of dealers listed here, I have no relationship with any of them except as a customer from time to time. No guarantee is made (or implied) for anything!

Has a showroom, catalog and web site. Not the place it was in the 60's and 70's as Uncle Sam doesn't generate as much surplus as he used to (and tends to "de-mill" anything useable these days). However, they are still receiving Govt and commercial material. Makes a good 1 or 2 hour rest stop as travelling I-75.

They buy lots of surplus equipment and tear it down for piece parts and scrap metal. You can walk in and browse. Nothing is very organized although
resistors are generally in the same area, etc. They have some test equipment - it's very hit or miss but not too much very new (< 20 to 30 years old).
They do have an e-bay store at
