I have been involved with horses and ponies
my entire life. At the age of 3 years, my first horse was a 3 month old
Shetland Pony filly. I grew up working and showing my family's show ponies.
I exhibited our ponies in gaming events, roadster, fine harness, pleasure
driving, parade pony, fancy turnout - as well as, driving teams of Shetland
Ponies in working pairs and 4-pony hitches whenever I could get the chance.
I got my first full sized horse when I was
no longer able to ride the Shetland Ponies. He was a palomino,
Morgan/Quarter cross gelding. His name was Nugget. I trained Nugget to do
everything possible. I was able to ride Nugget saddle seat, hunt seat and
western. Nugget also excelled at driving, showmanship and trail. Nugget did
the Dad Potter moves for 4-H, and we trail rode and even team penned on him.
He and I went through the entire 4-H program, and we had many very
successful years in the show ring together. When I was asked in later years
to do clinics for 4-H, Nugget and I would always do the showmanship patterns
without a halter and lead - just voice and movement.
I began training professionally in 1980.
Initially, I only trained Shetland, Hackney and Welsh ponies. As time went
on, I started to train Saddlebreds and Arabians in addition to the ponies.
Then, I was introduced to the Pinto breed and their shows and now have a
wide variety of horses and ponies in the training barn. We ride all seats
and drive as well as halter. We have youth and amateur customers. Along with
the breeds mentioned above, I have a few quarter horses and paints as well.
I, currently, train out of a private
facility in Boring, Oregon (a few miles east of Portland) at Mountain View
Show Horses, owned by Brian and Teri Syring. My training program is
customized for each horse and/or rider. I take each horse and move them
along as slow or as fast as they can handle. All are started in long lines
on the ground, and they learn everything from ground before they are ever
put in a buggy or ridden. They are not just taught to do only what they need
to know to get them through one class.
My prices are affordable, and there is a
personal one on one with each customer.
Our show season is very busy with Pinto,
Saddlebred and Arabian with a few other breed shows as well.
I have trained many horses and their owners
to National Championships in Shetland, Pinto and Arabian.
I have been very lucky as the great success
I have accomplished in the show ring is due to the great horses my customers
have entrusted me with.
