Capitol Police Patch

CAPITOL POLICE

The Capitol Area Security Patrol (CASP), now commonly referred to as the Capitol Police, was transferred to the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1976. This division of the Highway Patrol is responsible for protecting state employees and property within Shawnee County, Kansas. The law enforcement positions within the Capitol Police start with Capitol Police Officer. The normal advancement is to Capitol Police Sergeant, and then Lieutenant. Additionally the Capitol police employ communications officers to assist patrol and security officers in there daily activities. These officers start as communications officer I's and can work up to the position of communications sergeant. The capitol police also employ security officers to assist visitors and state employees within the capitol complex area. These officers start out as capitol area guards, and can work there way up to capitol area guard supervisor. The Capitol Police are members of troop K of the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Communications Specialist

The Communications Specialist position is responsible for performing duties in direct support of officers in the field, these officers also provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies across the state. Communications Specialist officers work 24 hours a day on a local, state and national level, these officers provide assistance to patrol and other law enforcement agencies. Communications Specialists are responsible for directing,informing, and assisting field officers during the course of their duties. These officers provide information on road and weather conditions, assistance with emergency calls from the public, and additional information to state employees and the general public.

Motor Carrier Inspection

The Motor Carrier Division (MCI) was transferred to the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1986. Motor Carrier Inspectors' primary responsibility is the enforcement of truck, and trailer, size and weight laws of the State Of Kansas. MCI officers patrol in mobile enforcement units, and can establish temporary weigh stations for selective enforcement or may be stationed at permanent scale facilities across the state. MCI personnel are initially employed as MCI 1's and may advance to MCI 2's and MCI 3's then to MCI Sergeant.

Motorist Assistance Technician

The Motorist Assistance Program (MAV unit) was added to the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1994. The primary function of this program is to provide assistance and aid motorists in traffic incident management. Motorist Assistance Technicians assist the motoring public thru out the State of Kansas, checking on abandoned vehicles and providing mechanical assistance along most major kansas highways. The MAV program is truly beneficial because it frees patrol officers to perform other law enforcement duties.

Trooper

The Trooper career begins with the rank of Trooper I. After serving as a Trooper I for at least four years, the opportunity to advanced to the rank of Trooper II may be offered. From Trooper II, the test for the rank of Sergeant is available after five years. After Sergeant, there are prescribed lengths of service to compete for the higher rank of Lieutenant, Captain and Major. After ten years of service, Trooper II's become eligible for Master Trooper rank.
