The f irst Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper to die in the line of duty, was Trooper Maurice R. Plummer. (K36) Trooper Plummer was fatally injured in a traffic accident on US 40 Highway near Russell, Kansas, and died December 16, 1944. Trooper Plummer was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on May 28, 1941. |

Trooper Jocobs (K166) was fatally injured in a traffic accident on U.S. Highway 54, East of El Dorado, Kansas on October 8th, 1959. Trooper Jacobs was making an emergency blood run, and collided with a flatbed truck that made a left turn in front of him. Trooper Jocobs was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on July 16, 1956. |

Trooper McMurray (K257) was struck by a car on Highway K-18 near Manhattan, Kansas on December 9th, 1964. Trooper McMurray had been working a vehicle accident, and was killed at the rear of his patrol car while putting a camera away. Trooper McMurray was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on October 1, 1962. |

Lieutenant Hill (K71) was fatally injured in a traffic accident on the Kansas Turnpike near Andover, Kansas on May 28th, 1967. Lieutenant Hill's patrol car was struck head-on by a vehicle that had crossed the median after seperating from its towing unit. Lieutenant Hill was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol April 15, 1946. |

Sergeant Miller (K98) was the first Kansas Highway Patrol Officer to die from gunfire. Sergeant Miller was shot on January 19th, 1968, assisting in the apprehension of bank robbers who had robbed the Metcalf State Bank in Overland Park, Kansas. Sergeant Miller was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on January 13, 1953. |

Trooper Thornton (K47) was shot and fatally injured by a hitch-hiker on The Kansas Turnpike, East of Topeka, Kansas, on October 2nd, 1973. Thornton's murderer was later shot in Topeka, Kansas after refusing to surrender. Thornton's killer was wanted in New York City for the murder of his father. Trooper Thornton was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on July 1, 1949. |

Trooper O'Brien (K108) was fatally shot on the Kansas Turnpike, near the Cassody interchange, in the early morning hours of May 24th, 1978. The three male suspects were later apprehended after a vehicle chase, gun battle, and manhunt south of Herington, Kansas. Trooper O'Brien was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on September 18, 1974. |

Trooper Pribbenow (K211) made a routine traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike near El Dorado, Kansas, on July 11th, 1981. He was walking up to the suspects car, when the driver exited the vehicle, firing several shots, fatally wounding Trooper Pribbenow. After a gun battle the suspect was killed near the Wichita Turnpike interchange. Trooper Pribbenow was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on July 13, 1959. |

Master Trooper Huff (K334) died on November 26th, 1993, as a result of a traffic accident he was involved in on November 3rd, 1993. The traffic accident occured on US 81, 6 miles south of Concordia, Kansas. Master Trooper Huff was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol September 14, 1970. |

Master Trooper Goodheart(K377) was fatally injured on September 6th, 1995, just East of Colby, Kansas. He was finishing a truck inspection, and as he climbed down from the tractor, onto the roadway, he was struck by a car and killed. Master Trooper Goodheart was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol on November 1, 1972. |
When a KANSAS HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER is killed in the line of duty, the "K" radio number next to his name is retired forever and never reissued.
The names of troopers who have died, along with other Kansas law enforcement officers, are inscribed into the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial, located on the Northeast side of the Kansas State House, in Topeka, Kansas. |
