Vyjayantimala
A symbol of grace and elegance
Vyjayanthimala or Vyjayantimala is a multi-talented Bollywood super heroine of the 1950's and 1960's. (The term Bollywood has been coined by combining Bombay and Hollywood and refers to Indian Hindi movie industry based in Bombay.) Vyjayanthimala is a professional Bharatanatyam (a form of Indian classical dance) dancer in the first place. The Indian movie makers of those days took advantage of her dancing talents and made her a dancing heroine. Almost all of her roles had some dance sequences and she performed them superbly. People expected to see some dances when they went to a Vyjayanthimala movie. Vyjayanthimala had, in fact, introduced the semi-classical form of dancing to Indian Hindi movies which has now become an essential ingredient of Bollywood 'masala' movies.
This site celebrates the life of Vyjayanthimala who is in her mid-seventies today and still lives an active life.
