Proud to Be : My Life, the Air Force, the
Controversy
Synopsis:
Proud to Be is the story that Kelly Flinn couldn't tell
in uniform. The first woman to pilot a B-52, Flinn rose quickly
in the ranks of the U.S. Air Force. But before long, the
26-year-old lieutenant found herself in the middle of a national
scandal that signaled the end of her career. Proud to Be
tells Flinn's powerful story--in a book that speaks to all women
who find their private lives invaded by their public status.

Here is a copy of the Monday, June 16 1997 Reuter's news
service article about Random House's announcement:
NEW YORK (Reuter) - Kelly Flinn, the Air Force's first
woman B-52 pilot who quit in disgrace rather than face a
court-martial for adultery, had a proud new boss Monday - a
major New York publisher.
Random House announced it had bought Flinn's
yet-unwritten memoirs for an undisclosed price and would
publish them this fall. ``This will be a memoir of major
importance and lasting power by a remarkable woman who was a
groundbreaking pilot and a patriot,'' Random House president
Harold Evans said.
``Her story of the double standard she endured and the
broader implications for women both within the military and
outside will prove to have widespread repercussions.''
Flinn, 26, the Air Force's first woman bomber pilot, was
forced to resign her commission last month and take a less
than honorable discharge for having an affair with a civilian
who claimed to be legally separated from his wife.
If she had not resigned, she would have had to face a
court-martial for lying about the affair and disobeying an
order to break if off.
Ann Godoff, Random's editor-in-chief, said the deal with
Flinn was signed last week and the former pilot will write
the book herself without a ghost writer.
``From the material we have seen from her so far, she is
a startingly good writer. She will move to the East Coast and
we will closely work with her. This book is part of her
coming to terms with what happened,'' Godoff told Reuters.
She added, ``She (Flinn) is not deeply regretful. All she
wants is her story told and she wants to tell it.''
In an article for Newsweek this month, Flinn said the
treatment she received was indicative of a military double
standard in cases based on sex and rank. She compared her
case to that of Air Force Gen. Joseph Ralston, who was under
consideration for the post of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff until he withdrew because of controversy over his
admission he had an adulterous affair 13 years ago.
