WILLIAM CHASE, was born about 1595 in England. With his wife Mary, and son William, he was the first of his Chase family to cross the Atlantic. He, his wife Mary, and their son William, all from the Parish of Wivenhoe, Essex, England, accompanied Governor Winthrop and his colony in 1630, settling first in Roxbury, Mass. He soon became a Founder of the "First Church of Roxbury".
The Rev. John Eliot, the Apostle to the Indians, was pastor. On October 19, 1630, he applied for freemanship and was admitted a freeman May 14, 1634. From about 1632 to 1636, Mary Chase suffered with great pain because of a back problem. In fact, the Roxbury City Records states that" She lay 4 years & a halfe, & a great pt of time a sad spectakle of misery; But it pleased God to raise her againe, & she bore children after it." In 1637, or thereabouts, William became one of the company who made a new settlement at Yarmouth, of which town he was made constable in 1639. Mary, his wife, died in October 1640.

WILLIAM CHASE, son of William and Mary Chase of England, was born in England around 1622. He came to America with his parents in 1630 in the company of Governor Winthrop. They settled first in Roxbury. Upon reaching manhood he became a resident of Yarmouth, Mass. He died February 27, 1685. His children were:

ISAAC CHASE, was the son of William Chase and Hannah Sherman Chase. On December 10, 1704 he married Elizabeth Bethen, daughter of John and Jane Marks Bethen, of Salem, Mass. He married for the second time on September 2, 1720 to Mary Fowler, daughter of Samuel. They resided in Swansea, Mass. Isaac Chase died in 1760. Children of Isaac and Hannah were:

JAMES CHASE, son of Isaac and Elizabeth Bethen Chase, was born February 12, 1706, in Swansea, Mass. He married Alice Anthony, Daughter of William and Mary Coggeshall Anthony, on May 11, 1727. She died in March 1762 in her 57th year. On June 30, 1763, James married Lydia, widow of Jonathan Thurston. Her maiden name was Goddard. James moved to Middletown, Rhode Island where he died on April 20, 1782. Lydia Chase died June 16, 1784.

ZACCHEUS CHASE, son of James Chase and Alice Anthony Chase, was born November 4, 1737 in Freetown, Mass. On March 3, 1759 he married Elizabeth Gould, daughter of John and Elizabeth Gould. Zaccheus Chase was listed in our nation's first census conducted in 1790. He was living in the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island in the county of Newport. He died August 6, 1816. Elizabeth Gould Chase died September 24, 1821.

ISAAC CHASE, son of Zaccheus and Elizabeth Gould Chase, was born February 5, 1764 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He was a land owner and farmer in South Portsmouth. His farm was previously owned by the Bowler family. It is said that, during the Revolution, Generals Washington and LaFayette visited the farm and were entertained by Mr. Bowler who made apple brandy and cider from his Rhode Island greening apples. Bowler had brought a slip for this tree from England. Isaac Chase was a member of the "Society of Friends". Isaac married Phebe Hall, daughter of George and Charity Hall, who died November 11, 1815, and was buried in the Friends Cemetery.

ISAAC CHASE, JR. was born April 8, 1791 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. On January 1, 1817 he married Ruth Dennis, daughter of Robert and Ruth Dennis. He and Ruth moved to Salem, Indiana in 1817, from Portsmouth, Rhode, Island. He was a merchant and a farmer. He was a Quaker, as he was listed with a group from Salem who refused to muster with the militia, or take part in any warlike matters. Records of the "Society of Friends" A/K/A/ "Quakers", show that on April 4, 1818, Isaac Chase, Jr. and wife Ruth were received on certificate from the Rhode Island Monthly Meeting, Portsmouth, Rhode Island. In May 1828, Isaac, Ruth, and their three children: Charles, Mary, and Aaron Burr Chase, joined the "Separatists". In fact, several members of their group left the Blue River group leaving the Monthly Meeting in a weakened state. Isaac Chase was mentioned in the 1830 minutes, but Ruth Chase was not. Ruth Chase died October 22, 1840 at the age of 49. In 1860, Isaac was living with his daughter, Mary Chase Butler in Washington County, Indiana. Listed next on the census record was the Charles H. Chase family. Isaac Chase, Jr. died on September 10, 1875 in New Albany, Indiana where he had been living with his daughter Mary and son-in-law, Judge John H. Butler.

CHARLES H. CHASE was born on July 1, 1820. He lived in Salem, Indiana and on July 2, 1843 married an Elizabeth Clark of Kentucky. He was the son of Isaac and Ruth Dennis Chase of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. On the census records, Charles listed his mother and father as being born in Rhode Island. Charles H. Chase died June 17th of 1884. He is buried at the Crown Hill Cemetery located on the SW side of Salem, Indiana. Elizabeth Clark Chase, born June 10, 1821, died on December 22, 1880.

JOHN B. CHASE was born on May 21, 1865. He was the son of Charles H. and Elizabeth Clark Chase of Salem, Indiana. He married Martha Breedlove, daughter of Martin and Margaret Ann Anderson Breedlove of Washington County, Indiana on August 4, 1887. Their home was in Hancock Chapel, Harrison County, Indiana.
John died on April 1, 1921. Martha was born in Indiana on May 27, 1867. She died on September 11, 1924. Both are buried at the Hancock Chapel Cemetery.
John and Martha had four children. They were:

CHILDREN OF JOHN B. CHASE:
MINNIE E. CHASE, was born June 6, 1889 in Hancock Chapel, Harrison County, Indiana. She was the daughter of John B. Chase and Martha Breedlove Chase. She married Thurman Smith on October 11, 1911 and lived most of her adult life in Louisville, Kentucky. Her last years were spent at the Masonic Widows Home in Louisville.
They had one daughter: Dorothea Elizabeth Smith.
Dorothea E. Smith married James Dixon Harpole
Dorothea E. Smith married James Dixon Harpole "J.D.". They lived in Indianapolis, Indiana. They have two sons:
Dixon and David. She died in 1996.
HARVEY N. CHASE was born May 12, 1898 in Hancock Chapel, Harrison County, Indiana. The son of John B. Chase and Martha Breedlove Chase married Glenn Ott on March 31, 1930. He lived his adult life in Gibson City, Illinois.
Harvey had had one adopted son: Darrel
OSCAR JOHN CHASE, son of John B. Chase and Martha Breedlove Chase, and twin of Ogle James Chase, was born October 19, 1900 in Hancock Chapel, Harrison County, Indiana. He got polio as a youth. Oscar graduated from business school. He married Pearl Bigler, also from Hancock Chapel, Indiana on April 27, 1929. Oscar and Pearl moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Oscar retired from the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, Pearl retired from the Arrow Shirt Company. They returned to Indiana after retirement and bought a home in Bradford, Indiana. Oscar died on May 7, 1978. He is buried at the Hancock Chapel Cemetery.
OGLE JAMES CHASE, son of John B. Chase and Martha Breedlove Chase, was born on January 19,1900 in Hancock Chapel, Harrison County, Indiana. He was a twin of Oscar John Chase. He married Lillie B. Trowbridge, daughter of Amos and Mary Keehn Trowbridge. They lived most of their lives in New Albany, Indiana. Ogle retired from Ford Motor Co. and Lillie retired from the Fair store. Ogle liked to fish; Lillie was a very good cook. Sunday dinners usually included: fried chicken, mashed potatoes with milk gravy, chocolate and coconut pies. Both were loving grandparents. Lillie was an active member of the Silver Street Church of Christ in New Albany. Ogle died 1-15-1979, Lillie died on 1-15-1985. Both are buried at the Fairview Cemetery on East Eight street in New Albany, Indiana.
Ogle and Lillie had two children. They were:

RAYMOND LLOYD CHASE was born on April 26, 1927. He married Doris Uhl, daughter of John Nicholas Uhl and Dorothy Cheap Uhl of New Albany, Indiana. They lived in Mesa, Arizona after spending most of their married life in Phoenix, Arizona. Raymond is retired from the Garrett Corporation, Doris sold Avon products for several years. Doris died in July 1992, after an operation to remove a large tumor. There were six children to this union. Raymond married second, Virginia Roggenkamp Trowbridge, widow of Victor Trowbridge, on May 11, 1997 in Floyd Knobs, Indiana. There are no children from this union.

DEANNA ELIZABETH CHASE was born on December 11, 1937 in New Albany, Indiana. She married Charles E. Scott, Jr. of Louisville, son of Charles E. Scott and Helen Marie Page Scott on May 20, 1961 at the Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville. Deanna attended New Albany High School. She worked for the Federal Reserve Bank for about ten years. Deanna and Charles have lived in Louisville since 1961. They have two children:
