FAMILY HISTORY
Thomas Wassum, son of Hans Jacob Wassum and Katharina Wassum, was born in Germany (maybe Kirsch-Bromback) around 1660. He married Margaretha Volk in 1681 and had at least two sons. They were: Johannes and Benedict.
Johannes Wassum, son of Thomas and Margaretha Volk Wassum, was born in 1691, in Kirch-Brombach, Germany. He married Elisabetha Fleck around 1718. They had two children: Johann Conrad and Johannes. Elizabeth died and Johannes married for the second time in 1733 to Margaretha Barbara Schindel. There were at least two children from this union: Leonard and Johann George Wassum. The Wassum's were members of the Lutheran Church. Johannes is said to have moved to the little village of Ober-Kinzig, Germany and reportedly died in 1749.
Leonard Wassum, son of Johannes and Margaretha Barbara Schindel Wassum, was born in Kirch-Brombach, Germany on Nov. 21, 1733. (Lutheran Parish at Kirch-Brombach, Germany shows birth records) Along with three of his brothers he came to America on Nov. 2, 1752 on the ship Phoenix. He arrived in Philadelphia but settled in Heidleberg Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania He married Elizabeth Catherina Ohl, daughter of a wealthy citizen of Heidleberg. Leonard died in December, 1790. There were four children fron this union: John, Conrad, Nicholas, Jacob.
John Wassom, son of Leonard and Catherine Ohl Wassum, was born in 1770, probably in Heidleberg Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He married Sarah Elizabeth Sells, daughter of Solomon Sells, in 1790. They had at least two children: Jonathan and John Wassom, Jr. John settled in Sullivan County, Tennessee and died there in 1840. He is buried in Beeler Cemetery, Sullivan County, Tennessee. Sarah died in 1825.
JONATHAN WASSOM, son of John and Sarah Elizabeth Sell Wassom, was born in 1795, probably in Heidleberg, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Booher, daughter of Martin and Catherine Rhoder Booher, on March 14, 1813. Eleven children were born to this union: Johannes, Catherena, Moses, Harriet, Lydia, Jesse, Jonathan, Nancy, Adaline, Sara Caroline, and Elizabeth Jane Wassom. Jonathan died on June 7, 1861 near Sperry, Iowa. His wife, Elizabeth, died on May 13, 1839.
JESSE WASSOM, son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Booher Wassom, was born on November 13, 1823. He married Margaret Jackson, daughter of William and Jerusha Inman Jackson, and had ten children. They were: Scott, Clark, John, Samuel, Belle, Jerusha, Clara, Jessie, Kate, and Mary. Jesse died August 13, 1891. Margaret, who was born September 24, 1828 died May 2, 1913.
CLARK WASSOM, son of Jesse and Margaret Jackson Wassom, was born September 16, 1860 in Dodgeville, Iowa. He married Amelia Kolbe, daughter of Julius and Marie Knuttel Kolbe, on August 27, 1902. One child was born to this union: Samuel Jesse Wassom. Clark died in Iowa on December 19, 1928. His wife, Amelia, died February 16, 1920.
SAMUEL JESSE WASSOM, son of Clark and Amelia Kolbe Wassom, was born November 28, 1904 in Burlington, Iowa. He married Jane Becknell, daughter of Daniel and Leah Erbe Becknell, on August 23, 1936 in Waterloo, Iowa. Jane was born June 21, 1910 in Waterloo, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: John Clark, Jeanne Marie, Marilyn Jane.
JOHN CLARK WASSOM, son of Samuel Jesse and Jane Becknell Wassom, was born November 13, 1939 in Davenport, Iowa. He married Sharon Ferneau, daughter of Glen and Anna Marie Letch Ferneau, on September 2, 1961 in Grinnell, Iowa. Sharon was born May 25, 1939 in Grinnell, Iowa. John has a doctorate in economics and is currently a professor. John and Sharon had one son: Gregory Scott Wassom.
GREGORY SCOTT WASSOM, son of John Clark and Sharon Ferneau Wassom, was born July 16, 1966 in Indiana. He married Melissa Chase Scott, daughter of Charles and Deanna Chase Scott, on March 26, 1994. Gregory, a graduate of Western Kentucky University, also has a MBA from the University of Mississippi. He is a banker and his wife Melissa, born August 6, 1965 in Louisville, Kentucky, is a teacher. Melissa has her undergraduate, masters, and Rank One degrees from Western Kentucky University. One son, Jack Scott Wassom has been born to this union.
JACK SCOTT WASSOM, son of Gregory and Melissa Chase Scott Wassom, was born February 7, 1997.
