A band as good as the Flaming Lips will make occasional adventures into the mainstream of pop music. Back in 1993 their album Transmissions From The Satellite Heart had a cute little pop song called "She Don't Use Jelly." Remember that one? We'll if you don't you'll hear it on Sound Collage someday. Anyway, some of the FM alternative stations were playing that song. Soon, all the trendies could be heard singing " She uses Va-ah-ah-ah-asoline..." The popularity of the song even got them a guest apperance on Beverly Hills 90210, where character Steve Sanders exclaimed "I don't usually like alternative, but these guys rocked the house!" Steve, I don't usually watch your stupid show, but The Flaming Lips made it worth watching!
But the Lips are simply too wierd to stay in the mainstream for too long. Sure vocalist Wayne Coyne belts out some infectious melodies, and the Lips consistantly make perfect pop songs, but those songs are buried under layers of guitar noise or waves of psychadelica. In 1997, the Lips released a four-CD sound experiment entitled Zaireeka, the album was too frustrating and aimless for most listeners to get a hold of.
So in the present day, the Oklahoma City band has released the album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots the follow up to their 1999 masterpiece The Soft Bulletin. Tune into Sound Collage to hear "Do You Realize" and other great songs from The Flaming Lips.
