THE PIONEER

The high school I graduated from, East Bank High School, had the Pioneer as its mascot.  This year the school will be closed and consolidated with another high school.  The Pioneer mascot had a younger face, but since the school has been in existence since 1912,  the carving depicts an older Pioneer.  Actually, I hardly ever do a face without a beard and mustache.  My dad asked me to carve this fellow for his class's 50th reunion.  It will be raffled off to raise money for the reunion.

This is a front view.  I used walnut (base is basswood) and carved the flintlock rifle and right hand separate from the rest of the figure in order to get the grain running in the right direction for the rifle.  EB stands for East Bank.  I still need to have an engraved plate made with the title "The Pioneer" and the dates 1912-1999.

This is a left prospective view showing the coonskin cap having the black rings burned into the tail and EB burned into the possibles bag.

This is a right perspective view showing the flintlock mechanism of the rifle.  Richard Teter from South Carolina told me how he made the flintlock mechanism on a rifle of a Minuteman carving, and that helped some, but in no way compares to Richard's (seen at the Charlotte show).  Note that, since there was no pattern to go by, I forgot the powder horn.  Don't tell anyone ;-)  When I was carving the right hand I was using my left hand as a guide (had the knife in my right) and managed to get the thumb on the wrong side of the hand, luckily there was enough wood on the rifle's butt to correct that mistake.
