There are many requirements for advancement, only some of which are technical. The rank requirements here are a partial list of the techniques and knowledge required for advancement. The requirements are cumulative. That is, besides the specific requirements listed for each rank, all the lower rank requirements are also included (and tested). The categories into which these requirements are organized are as follows:

General Knowledge—This is information that is not directly related to self-defense, but is part of the overall understanding of this method of learning self-defense. This includes basic understanding of equipment, protocol, and history.

Kata—These are individual techniques used as part of an overall defense. The student will learn many more techniques than the ones listed in the formal syllabus. The listed techniques are used for testing purposes and to ensure a common core of technical knowledge.

Waza—As the student progresses through the ranks, their ability to defend themselves against various attacks improves. Waza, as it is used here, is any defense against a specific attack consisting of one or more kata (above). Any defense may be used against an attack. However, for safety purposes, the student is expected to use techniques taught in the class and to tailor the defense to match the skill of the attacker (e.g. a Tomoe Nage is not appropriate against a White Belt!).
