O Goshi -or- Koshi Nage

(Basic Hip Throw)

Although I’m starting to feel more comfortable with this throw, I still feel most confident executing it with an Uke who’s my size or smaller. Since it is unlikely that that size person will attack me on the street I prefer Ippon Seoi Nage, which requires less flexibility and provides a quicker setup.

O Goshi is the first lifting throw we teach and is considered a training throw. That is, it is part of the foundation for training and the parent to many other throws, but most students find they prefer other throws for actual self defense.

From this throw the student learns the basic lift (with her legs, not her back), control of her partner (both to do the throw and to help him fall properly), flexibility, and is introduced to irimi. To lift her Uke, the Tori must bend at the knees to get her hips below the Uke’s center of gravity. The Tori then clamps the Uke to her back using both arms to prevent him from sliding down or to the side. Finally the Tori straightens her legs to lift the Uke up on the back of the Tori’s hips.
