Gambling An Option For Glades County?

Glades Commissioner Storter's Gambling Views

MOORE HAVEN, FL. -- Glades County Commissioner Donna Storter Long has this week written a letter in respose to inquiries about bringing in additional Glades county money. Storter wrote to Eric Kopp of Independent News:

"I received your message of yesterday and offer this response: About 10 days ago, John Austin Collier brought me the idea of countywide gambling as a viable revenue option for Glades County in reversing the negative impacts on the economy that is expected by the sale of US Sugar to South Florida Water Management District.

Since gambling is legal, regulated and already exists in Glades County at Brighton, the possibility of obtaining revenue from legalized gambling definitely warrants further discussion.

Governor Crist supports gambling in Florida, and though revenue to the state was down a few years ago, the temporary decline was because the lucrative expansions were under Indian control and not subject to state taxation.

Should we embark on this course, with careful planning and management of the initial revenues, Glades County can restore and recreate the amenities that will make our county the new family vacation destination of the freshwater frontier, with more attractions than just gambling establishments.

Produced without environmental pollution and with little demand on government services and infrastructure, the revenue can be used to enhance services and infrastructure while lowering ad valorem tax millage. That has been the consensus of the many constituents that have been approached by this idea.

I have conferred with Sen. Alexander's staff and Rep. Grimsley's staff and learned the procedure for offering this choice to the people of Glades County.  It will take 600,000 signatures to get the initiative on the ballot for Florida voters statewide to decide if they want to amend our constitution to allow Glades County to conduct its own referendum to authorize gambling in Glades County.

That Glades County referendum would require affirmation by 60% of Glades County voters, the PEOPLE would decide if the option merits opportunity.

We have the climate.  We have the geography.  Maybe this can be a viable opportunity.  It certainly should not be ignored, but carefully examined to determine all the positive and all the negative results we could anticipate from this proven moneymaker and give the people of Glades County the facts to make their own decision; is this the direction our County should take?

There is no panacea for the economic woes of Glades County, but, because this is one option that could bring a lot of revenue to Glades County, I feel we should at least explore it. Therefore, I will request that Governor Crist direct his resources to help us in this exploration."

-Donna Storter Long (R), Glades County Commissioner, (863.673.2661- Cell 158*17* 36430-Nextel

Homeowners In Trouble May Have Help

Seek Free Legal Help Says Commissioner

LABELLE, FL. -- Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson encourages homeowners who are threatened with foreclosure or fearful that their lending institution may foreclose on their property to contact the Florida Bar Association to obtain free legal assistance.

According to Florida Legal Services Inc., 77,000 state homeowners are in foreclosure, making Florida second in the nation only to California in the number of homes in that status.  And many others are at least 30 days past due on their mortgage payment, which places them at risk of having their loans foreclosed.

Florida Legal Services and the Florida Bar Association have partnered in establishing a toll-free hotline -- 1-866-607-2187 -- that consumers can call to answer a few initial questions about their situation to ensure accurate placement with a free attorney.  The attorney will then negotiate with the lender on behalf of the client to keep the home from being foreclosed.

"I applaud Florida Legal Services and the Florida Bar for offering this public service," Bronson said.  "Home ownership remains a foundation of our society, leading to the stability of families and contributing significantly to our local, state and national economy, and any effort that helps families keep their homes in this uncertain economy is beneficial."

More than 10,000 Florida attorneys have volunteered their services in the program, according to Florida Legal Services Inc.

Ice Cream - Good For The Soul

Commentary by T. W. Bill Neville

With all the malice aforethought being given to "what's this younger generation coming to?"  I couldn't pass up a chance to pass on this story I received from my niece in Tallahassee.

She and her husband were out for lunch when a well dressed woman and her two children were seated in an adjoining booth.  My niece was especially taken with the way the two children behaved, a boy about six and his sister about four years old.

After they ordered and the food was delivered, the boy asked if he could say the grace, and when his Mother said yes, he bowed his head and proceeded to pray.  "God is good, God is great.  Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert---------  and liberty and justice for all!  Amen."

This brought on a rousing chorus of laughter from the other tables with one woman clearly in disagreement loudly remarking, "That's what's wrong with this country.  Kids don't even know how to pray.  Asking God for ice cream!  Why I never!"

Hearing this comment, the boy burst into tears and asked his Mother, "Did I do it wrong?  Is God mad at me?"

The Mother hugged him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him just as an elderly man approached their table.

The man leaned over to the boy, winked at him and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer" as the boy said, "Really?", and the man said "Cross my heart."

Then he leaned in closely and in a theatrical whisper, indicating the table where the woman who had made the remark, and said "A little ice cream is good for the soul, sometimes."

So without hesitation the Mother made sure that the kids got to order their ice cream at the end of the meal.  Then, my niece reported that the little boy stared at his ice cream sundae for a long moment, and then did something that she said she will remember for the rest of her life.

The boy picked up his sundae and without a word he walked over to the ladies table and placed the sundae in front of the woman.  With a big, friendly smile he said to her, "Here this is for you.  Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes, and my soul is already good."

After a very meaningful hush, all the other people in the restaurant gave out with a hearty "AMEN!", and a round of applause, as the woman silently stared at the ice cream sundae and bolted for the door.

So, in this age of "Political correctness" and "out with the old, and in with the new", might we just slow down, and "Make it a double?"

Editor,

What a bunch of Bull turd!!! The reason there are no legal jobs in Montura is because you all serve the drug dealers. That IS your job! You all are poor because you spend your drug profits on drugging your addicted pathetic selves with pot, cocaine, and meth.

You now ask for donations for the clubhouse, the drug capital of montura? that sounds like another scam to fool people. I bet I know which drug dealer put you up to that one.

You know perhaps if you all sell all those ATV's and campers that you CAN afford somehow you may be able to feed your families.

Ediitor,

Pauline New Born was my friend and I wanted to say goodbye to her in this way.  She was a tuff and sometimes stubborn person, but she always had a heart for other people and their troubles. I shall miss our mostly of the time in-depth discussions of the latest news or how the world is going, etc.  Sometimes they were heated, but she always listened to my side of things.

She ran for State Representative and lost 2-3 yrs ago, but during her campaign she brought many things to the surface that needed attention by the good people of Hendry County.  She always was out there helping people that she hardly even knew and that was her strongest quality. I wish more people had her daring and self determination.  Years ago she was scandalized by trying to help Hendry Counties Sheriff and for that she was chastised.

I shall miss my friend and believe shes in a happier place now.  (A memorial was held Saturday at the house in  Double "J" Acres off of hwy 80.

God Bless

R. Smith

How To Effectively Get FPL To Fix It

Some area homeowers have been frustrated over frequent elecric outages, as many as a dozen times a month, and that air conditioning units, computers and digital video recorders (Tivo, etc.) have been damaged due to the number of times the electric goes out. If your microwave clock is flashing that indicates the electric momemtarily went out and and can potentially cause damage to your electrical equipment. See Florida Power and Light Complaints for information on how to complain to FPL and the Public Service Commission to get more dependable electric service.
