Natural Remedies for After Pains

After pains are a result of the uterus contracting back to its pre-pregnancy state after the birth. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider to be sure you can use these remedies safely.

  • Use Liferoot daily, up to 5 drops of tincture in water, for two to four weeks preceeding the birth.

  • Rest for several days after the birth and be sure to make frequent trips to the restroom to empty your bladder. This will keep your uterus firm and low preventing blood clots and pooling blood which contribute to afterpains.

  • Allow your baby to nurse as often as s/he wishes to help your uterus contract more smoothly. This will lessen the duration of the afterpains, but increase the intensity.

  • Ground Ivy: Drink one or two cups of the infusion daily to tone the uterus and ease afterpains.

  • Catnip: Drink the tea freely or take 10-30 drops of the tincture per day to relieve spasm of the uterus.

  • Motherwort: Take 5-20 drops of the tincture in water or one cup of tea to relieve afterpains and tone the uterus. Note that the tea has an extremely bitter taste.
