Natural Remedies for Tears

Please check with a healthcare provider before using any remedy.

Preventing Tears:

  • Perineal Massage: Begin streching the perineum in the third trimester with olive oil, Comfrey ointment, wheat germ oil, lanolin, or sesame oil. Check with your midwife about the exact procedure she wants you to follow.

  • Use warmed oil or hot compresses of Plantain or Comfrey during labor to encourage stretching of the perineum.

  • Try squatting, hands and knees or semi-sitting positions in labor to give the baby the maximum amount of room possible to be birthed. Any of these positions is less likely to cause tearing than lying on your back (lithotomy position).

  • Use controlled breathing instead of "purple pushing" to encourage the baby to come out slowly, decreasing the chance of tearing.

Remedies for tears:

  • Comfrey leaf: drink or use as a sitz bath.

  • Use any of the following sitz baths: Yarrow, Rosemary, Golden Seal, Oak Bark, Witch Hazel, Sea Grape bark, Myrrh. If you have stiches, limit sitz baths to one per day.

  • Aloe Vera: Use gel from a fresh plant and place on a gauze pad or menstrual pad and hold in place. Replace with fresh gel and pad when the pain returns.

  • Slippery Elm: Use a paste of slippery elm bark powder, water and olive oil or vitamin E oil directly on the tear. Comfrey root may also be added to speed healing.

  • Vitamin E: Use after tear is closed or after the third day on a sutured tear or episiotomy. Be especially clean as this oil attracts impurities and could promote infection. Use only pure vitamin E oil.
