The Volunteer EMT
Our pagers lay beside our bed,
with the button on alert.
As we lay down to go to sleep,
we pray no one gets hurt.
As we lay in blissful sleep,
our own shrill tones we hear.
We quietly crawl from our warm beds,
and glance at the loved one so near.
We scamper in the dark to find,
our shirt, our socks, our shoes.
And nervously await to hear,
from dispatch, that dreaded news.
So many things go through our minds,
our families don't understand.
That need and the desire,
to lend a helping hand.
Sometimes it's us, that suffer though,
when things get out of control.
Our lives, our loves, our families,
are the ones that pay the toll.
I know at times, it seems unfair,
to not go on that call.
But, look around at what you have,
or some day lose it all.
