The Execution Files

The convict is strapped to a specially built chair, head and body have been shaved to provide better contact with the moistened copper electrodes that the electrocutioner attaches. When the switch is thrown, the convict leaps forward against the restraining straps, often causing vomiting, urination or defecation. Witnesses have reported the smell of burned flesh. The jolt varies in power from state to state. It is determined by the convict's body weight. The first jolt is followed by several more in a lower voltage. In a typical execution, three or more executioners push buttons, but only one is connected to the actual electrical source. Eleven states have provisions for this method of execution.
