| The area just outside the
boundaries of Mammoth Cave National Park has been home to tourist-trap businesses
for a long time. Golgotha Mini-Golf is one of the more interesting
ones. Situated on a little hill ("Golgotha", I suppose), the miniature
golf course is laid out with a religious theme. In addition to the
usual mini-golf course obstacles, there are little churches, statues of angels,
etc. The photo above shows the three large, lighted crosses that announce the entrance to Golgotha. The lower photo shows the 18th hole, which ends at this statue of Jesus.
Golgotha also has a restaurant and, on the other side of that, a go-cart
track. They both appeared to be secular.I suppose the miniature golf course has some sort of attraction to certain religious people, but I'm hard put to figure out just what it might be. The thing seemed slightly blasphemous to me. Nonetheless, religious-theme tourist traps aren't uncommon. Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a tourist-trap town in the Smoky Mountains, has several such places. And in Pigeon Forge, near Gatlinburg, there is a gift shop with a sign advertising "Christ Barbie Dolls". I have no idea what that means. |
