Jewel is the third son of Addie and the one who receives all of Addie's love. Jewel is the result of a sinful affair with the Preacher Whitfield and because of this violent alliance, Jewel is very violent and rarely speaks unless he is cursing. Jewel loves Addie but is unable to express his love through words, so he acts out violently, and he transfers his love to his horse, which causes Darl to say that Jewel's mother is a horse. Addie calls Jewel her salvation and says that he will save her from the water and the fire, which he does when he rescues her from the river and the burning barn. He also gave up his horse so that they could continue the journey to get Addie to Jefferson. Jewel's actions show his love for his mother, and he was the only one of the family who didn't want to fulfill Addie's request based on selfish motives.
