Oh, sure, you could learn about people by sitting around for hours, quizzing them on their life stories. You could quietly observe them for years of their lives to gain a full measure of their depth.
But if you want to cut to the quick, get to the heart of their soul as quickly as possible, you need only observe people's behavior when they are dead. Or someone nearby is dead. It's very educational.
