/ Tyrone
A list of civil & religious parishes within Co. Tyrone as well as the town (if any) within that civil parish, Barony, & Union for the civil parish.
The information in the chart is based upon the Ordinance Survey Memoirs (vols 5 & 20) published by the Institute of Irish Studies (http://www.qub.ac.uk/iis/) (eds. A. Day & P. McWilliams). The Memoirs cover years 1821, 1823, 1831-6, & 1840. I have supplemented the information extracted from the O.S. Memoirs with other data I have gathered.
A number of Roman Catholic parish names have changed since the early 19th century; square brackets ([]) denote the current parish name.

To see a map of the civil parishes, Co. Tyrone civil parish map (from PRONI)
- Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths (1864 – present & for non-Catholic marriages from 1845 – present). In an index for vital records the Union is the same as the Registration District
- Primary Valuation of Ireland, commonly known as Griffith’s Valuation (GV) – 1848-1864 (date of GV varies by locality). GV is arranged by counties and within counties by Poor Law Union divisions and within Unions by civil parishes
- Getting an idea of the area in which an ancestor lived. Reading the various poor law union records, including the Board of Guardians Minute Books will give one an idea of the sociological conditions. To see the full details on Poor Law Records click here PRONI Poor Law Records (PRONI) http://proni.nics.gov.uk/records/poor_law.htm
The Barony is an important land division for records such as:
Old Age Pension (OAP) — first available in 1909 to claimants aged 70+
- OAP census search forms, aka "Green Sheets" which are held in the National Archives, Dublin
- Different OAP records are available from PRONI (& on microfilm from the Latter Day Saints aka Mormons)
- Both the Dublin and Belfast OAP records are organized by Barony and both have information on Tyrone OAP claimants; the records are not duplicative
Primary (Griffith's)Valuation – (see above)
