West Roxbury Neighborhood Council Meeting Minutes –February 27, 2001 Police Report by Sergeant Roy Chambers January 23, 2001 to February 27, 2001
The breaking and entering reports were for local businesses. Door locks are being twisted off and the robbers are taking money left at the location overnight. Sergeant Chambers said there is an inexpensive device to add to the lock that should prevent this type of break in. Basic Services: The single item discussed at the February 15 meeting was the proposed transfer of the full Liquor License held by Bertucci’s on VFW parkway to the 99 Restaurant proposed for the old IHOP site on VFW Parkway. The restaurant will seat two hundred and ten (210) people. There will be bar seating for thirty (30) people. The restaurant will close at midnight. Committee Chairman Steve Smith summed up the opinions of those for and against the proposal as: Those opposing felt there are enough establishments with liquor licenses on the Parkway/in West Roxbury, and the proximity of the 99 Restaurant to Millennium Park. Those supporting the proposal felt there was a need for this type of restaurant in West Roxbury and that it would replace what is now an eyesore on the Parkway. People also noted that the Spring Blossom Restaurant and the package store are at the entrance to Millennium Park as opposed to the 99 restaurant. A motion, for the full Neighborhood Council, to support awarding the liquor license to the 99 Restaurant passed three to one. The discussions continued at the Full Neighborhood Council meeting. The primary argument against the proposal was the addition of another liquor license in West Roxbury. In addition, people are concerned about how this might affect existing restaurants on Centre Street. Speaking against the proposal where a representative for David Donnelly, City Councilors Maura Hennigan and Peggy Davis-Mullen, and State Senator Marian Walsh. Those for the proposal said they often went to 99 Restaurants outside of West Roxbury and that it would be a good addition to the neighborhood. They stated their opinion that the 99 is more of a restaurant then a bar. It was also noted that the 99 is a family restaurant and more amiable toward children. A motion was made to accept the Basic Services Committee recommendation and support the transfer of the liquor license from Bertucci’s to the 99, and to support Bertucci’s request for a beer and wine license. The motion passed seven to five.
