West Roxbury Neighborhood Council

Meeting Minutes – January 29, 2002

Police Report by Captain Tim Murray

Sergeant Roy Chambers has accepted a new position in the Police Department and will no longer be the Community Relations Officer. Sergeant Kenny Jamison will be the new Community Relations Officer. We welcome Sgt. Jamison, and wish Sgt. Chambers the best of luck.

A member of the audience reported that someone said to her that her purse was taken from the trunk of her car while she was walking in Millennium Park. Sergeant Jamison and Captain Tim Murray checked, but could not find, a police report of the incident. They asked the audience member, that if she saw the woman again, to ask her to file a police report.

Committee Reports

Basic Services

On February 10th, there was a presentation by representatives from the Wall Company and the City of Boston regarding the street furniture being proposed for the City. The Wall Company is installing the furniture at no charge, but will sell advertising on items such as the bus shelters. There were some complaints that one of the bus shelters on Spring Street blocked the view of on-coming traffic for cars pulling onto Spring Street. Representatives of the Wall Company agreed the shelter is an obstruction, and will try to find a solution.

The light at the intersection of Centre and Lagrange Street does not have a left turn arrow even though there is a turning lane. The Traffic Department wants to do a traffic count before they add the turning arrow to the light.

CVS is planning to move to the old Roche Brothers store. They have agreed to close the parking lot curb cut onto Richwood Street. Steve Smith hopes they also look into removing one of the three curb cuts onto Centre Street.

There will be a meeting for West Roxbury’s Main Streets Program on Tuesday, February 12th from six to eight PM at the Roche Community Center.

The Zoning Advisory Committee’s Report

The following requests for zoning relief were made at the January 16th meeting:

52 Cheilmen Street: Add a rear dormer to an existing house. There is a side yard violation. The abutters were in favor. RECOMMEND APPROVAL

The Neighborhood Council unanimously approved the recommendation

4855 Washington Street: Change the occupancy from a one-family to a two-family dwelling. The lot area is insufficient, and there will be a basement apartment. Some of the abutters agreed to the plan because the new owner has improved the residence. RECOMMEND APPROVAL.

The Neighborhood Council unanimously approved the recommendation

29 and 31 Maplewood Street: Subdivide the existing lot and build two single-family homes. Zoning relief is required because the lot width and frontage is insufficient. Abutters are worried that the residence will require additional on street parking. RECOMMEND DENIAL, however the developer will go ahead and take this to the zoning board.

The Neighborhood Council unanimously approved the recommendation

The next Zoning Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled for February 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Roche Family Center.
