Star Trek: Future Champions

FAQ and (almost) 20 questions

1. In 20 words or less, what is the premise of this game?

The DC Comics Universe of the future, using the various Star Trek shows/movies as a template.

2. In 20 words or less, what is the background history to this game?

DC Comics history up until present day followed by the Star Trek history up until game time.

3. What is the time frame of this game?

Just prior to the latest Star Trek: the Next Generation movie.

4. Why DC Comics?

I would like to tap into some of the history used in DC Comics. Most notably the "mantles" involved in those comics. DC characters seem to have a history and a mythology that is not't easy to tap into in an RPG. It's something that I always wanted to use in a game, but never got a good chance. (What do I mean by mantles? Well, there was a Flash for World War II, then there was a Flash for the 60s, and now a Flash for the 90s. It stands to reason that in a DC Universe of the future, the same would be true. (Where as the Marvel "future" seems forced and phoney.))

5. Why Star Trek?

I always liked to run Star Trek games, but found them a little routine because of the military structure. Adding superheroes to it does cause a bit of a mix to the standard formula.

6. How important are the game rules?

If you're a rules monger, don't read any further.

If you're not a rules monger, the game rules are only important to design a character. This will definitely by a Storytelling type of game. I'm not a real big fan of any game system's rules, but Champions is real nice in terms of background ideas and general character design structure.

7. Is the only information source going to be DC and Star Trek?

No, definitely not. I, for one, have taken items from Macross Plus (Sharon Apple is a popular singer of the time), Akira (Japan, as a whole, is not part of the government of Earth and resembles a cyber-ghetto ala' Johnny Pneumonic and Cyberpunk), Dr. Who, etc. If you have a good idea for a character, just ask, I'm sure it can be incorporated.

8. Is this a party or a solo game?

A bit of both actually. I would like to put two to three PCs together here and there. If they are enlisted members of Starfleet, then they would be serving on the same ship. Party games are difficult to manage through E-mail, but if I keep the parties relatively small, it should work

9. I want to design a character, but I can't think of a good one.

You can use just about any part of Star Trek or DC Comics as an inspiration. Any planet from any of the Star Trek episodes/movies can be a home planet for a character. The same goes for any planet/character/dimension used in DC Comics. The only thing I'm really looking for is original ideas.

10. I want to run a Vulcan (Klingon, Romulan, Orion, Deltan, Daxamite, et. al.), do you have stats for that race?

No, I do not. I decided not to write up canned stats for aliens. Design the character any way you think is keeping in accordance with your character conception.

11. Okay, every game has a general objective, what is this one's?

Metas (the DC Universe's word for superheroes) have been not been recorded since the late 1990s. What would the status quo do if people start being able to fly and exhibit spectacular powers? That's the first gist of the game. At also becomes apparent, at the beginning of the game, that the Borg are on their way to Earth.

In "First Contact" the Borg came straight towards Earth. In the game they will be taking a plodding course through Romulan space, while heading towards Earth. In "First Contact" Picard and company come to the rescue. In the game, Starfleet will be sending their new Meta force out to deal with the Borg.

Of course there will be sub-plots going on, there always are in my games. The above is just the general idea of the crisis at hand.

Any other questions, please ask. If you have any suggestions for more "questions & answers" for this mailing, please say so. My game is basically a Storytelling game... Even up to the background and rules.
