Star Trek - Campaign Overview

Star Trek: Future Champions

This will probably be a "dual" game. What that means is that I will probably be running one live forum game online on AOL. This game will probably meet once a week for two hours to three hours a sitting. The day of the week and the time frame will be decided between myself and the definite players. All PCs in this game will be Starfleet personel and all PCs will be assigned to the same starship.

The other half of the game will be an E-Mail RPG which will hopefully move as fast as the response can be typed. These characters will be mosty solo characters, although other situations can be arranged. These PCs do not have to be Starfleet personel though. They can be solo superheroes operating in the same universe or they can be operating within Starfleet under circumstances other than the live action party. As a side comment, these characters don't even need to be terribly superheroic, I can manage super villians as well.

These games will occasionally cross over each other, perhaps even involving a "guest star" from an E-mail game to the live game if schedules can be arranged.

The general storyline is planned to consist of a few short adventures (episodes) before getting to the first big storyline (involving the Borg).

I will also be typing up a better background to the universe and current events, but I would like to get some ideas for PCs first. I would prefer to mold the universe around the characters I'm given first.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The future DC Comics Universe intertwined with the Star Trek universe.

IMPORTANCE OF THE PCs:
The PCs will be metas (the term for superheros in the DC Universe) and as such, will be some of the most powerful people in known space. If the players choose they can play a less important character (in the form of regular Starfleet enlisted personel and such). There are about a thousand low level metas (persons with one or two powers of about 5 to 15 character points) and about a hundred full blown metas (PCs included).

CAMPAIGN TONE:
(3) Some Cross-over between Good and Bad.
Most storylines will involve moral decisions in the style of the Star Trek universe. For the most part, the distinctions between Good and Evil are fairly clear cut.

REALISM:
(2) Romantic.
We are talking about superheroes and huge faster than light starships here.

OUTLOOK:
(3) Seriousness balanced by light-hearted.
???

CONTINUNITY:
(2) Mostly episodic, with some continuing stories.
Under the PBEM and live forum environments, this is the only fesible way of running the game. It should also keep it in style with the Star Trek universe as well. Since I will be trying to keep the PBEM and live forum versions intertwined, breaking up the game will make it easier to sync together.

PHYSICAL WORLD:
I will be using some fairly available books to describe the universe at large:
Star Trek Chronology by Michael and Denise Okuda (Pocket Books)
Timelines and episode guide.
Star Trek: the Worlds of the Federation by Shane Johnson (Pocket Books)
An out of date glossary of the planets and the races of the Star Trek universe.
Star Trek Technical Manual by Franz Joseph (Ballantine Books)
Blueprints and sketches of starships, bases, star maps, etc.
The Atlas of the DC Universe by Paul Kupperberg (Mayfair Games)
A glossary of cities, countries, and planets for the DC Role Playing Game.
Justice League Sourcebook by Ray Winninger (Mayfair Games)
Justice League sourcebook for the DC Role Playing Game.
Magic by Dan Greenberg (Mayfair Games)
A sourcebook on magic for the DC Role Playing Game.
Apokolips Sourcebook by Scott Paul Maykrantz (Mayfair Games)
A sourcebook on Darkseid and the other residents of Apokolips for the DC Role Playing Game.
World at War by Ray Winninger (Mayfair Games)
A sourcebook on World War II for the DC Role Playing Game.

I will be using other books and sources for the game (the Macross and Akira Japanimations, for instance) but I think the majority of information will come from the above. This doesn't mean you need these books to play or should run out and buy them, if you already own them, then feel free to use them. I will also be using, of course, the Star Trek episodes and movies, as well as the regular DC Comics that come out month by month.

The idea of the game is to draw on established heroes in a future incarnation. Perhaps this would be the grandchildren of the current hero. Maybe someone who stumbled upon the heroes secrets. An idolizer of a particular hero. The possibilities are endless. Just try to stick with DC Universe heroes (though some exceptions can be made with good reason), but not that hero in particular. (In other words, don't send a character sheet saying you want to play Bruce Wayne as Batman.) Try to keep the time frame in mind and come up with a good evolution of a character (or a totally new character).

Instead of doing revisionist history, I've decided that the written history of the future has a few holes in it. The most important of these is that the history from the late 1990s until the end of World War III is lost (whicih means our current history is still being written for the sake of the game). Also, the three main characters (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) who have been killed and restarted sometimes as many as five times, also have holes in their history. No one can confirm when they first appeared or what actions are really attributed to them.

CHARACTER BUILDING GUIDELINES:
Starting Points for PCs: 250 (but this can be expanded up to 350 with good reason and prior discussion with me)
Max. Points from one Disadvantage Category: 65
Characters can carry standard issue Starfleet equipment at no point cost. This includes communicators, non-modified phasers, tricorders, etc.

Begining Range Maximum
Attack 40-50 Active 75 Active
Defense 20-30 DEF 50 DEF

CAMPAIGN RULES:
Combat will use hit location charts when appropriate.
Knockdown rules will be used.

NOTE: I have not designed any equipment, race packages, or Starfleet skills. I will be working on some of these in the future (particularly the equipment and skills). Please see the bottom of this file for available character races and other Starfleet comments.

SKILLS
I will be providing a list of typical Star Trek skills. Please keep in mind that enlisted Starfleet characters should have some base training in one of the standard postions (Navigation, Communications, Engineering, etc.).

TALENTS & POWERS
All powers should be designed keeping the environment in mind. For example, Growth and Density Increase might not be useful in a starship environment. (Not all storylines will be restricted to one environment though (interior starship, planet's surface, empty space, etc.).

Characters should have at least one travel power.

Characters should also have some resistance to harsh environments (open space, hostile planet surfaces, etc.) even if it is only reliable for short periods of time.

Characters should be trained in one or more of the regular Starfleet positions. (For Starfleet personel.)

DISADVANTAGES
Pyschological disadvantages are not recommended, but will be allowed. All PCs operating within Starfleet will be expected to behave according to Starfleet protocols. Characters can have other view points that are contrary to Starfleet protocol, but they will still be expected to act as Starfleet professionals.

Secret and Public IDs are still available to Starfleet meta personel. The Commander of the meta division will still be aware of all Secret IDs, but the rest of Starfleet and the public will not be.

ALIEN RACES
Characters are not restricted to being human. Possible alien races are Vulcans, Klingons, Deltans, Andorians, etc. I'm open to most any ideas, the meta condition is not restricted to just humans.

EXTRA ADDITIONALS
For PCs I would like to have the following three extra items:
A brief piece of fiction describing the character's background.
A Chinese Portrait (the form for which I will send to player's when I get their character sheets).
A listing of a few songs that the player feels would be good "theme songs" for their character.

If you have any questions at all, please let me now. I'll be happy to entertain any sort of character idea, as long as it's somewhat serious. If you want specific background information, just ask. The only reason why I didn't go into details is that it would take years to compile a proper history of everything pertaing to DC Comics and Star Trek.

Thanks for your time,
Jason
