The surname "Evans" signifies "son of Evan."  "Evan" is an ancient Welsh baptismal name, the equivalent of "John," and is the Welsh form of the Scottish "Ewan," which is of  Celtic origin.

Researching the Evans family can be very difficult, especially if as in my branch everyone seems to be named John or James.  If you are researching the Evans, check out my family.  We may be cousins.

We do not know who John William Evans' parents were or where they came from, however family tradition is they came from around the Galveston area of Texas and they arrived in Texas by ship at the Galveston harbor.   While this seems a strange migration pattern, during the depression a lawyer came to Mississippi from Texas and had all of John William's children sign a paper giving up any claim to land in the Galveston area for $50.   What claim did they have to this land? Where exactly was this land?    None of John William's grandchildren know the details.   If you have heard this story or know more details, please contact  me.

Samuel Robinson Evans wrote a narrative concerning his grandfather, Ezekiel Evans and his father, James Evans and their experiences in the Revolutionary War.  While I can not yet claim them as my ancestors, this narrative is historically interesting.   You may recognise some predominate Evans traits in this narrative.   It is long but still incomplete.  If you have seen the missing pages, please let me know so we can share them with everyone.  Thank you,  Mary Kimball for sharing this with all of us.

FOUND - 8 reels of movie film taken in the 1920s through 1950s.  These films feature J.P. Evans and his two children, Phillip Evans bn about 1946/47 and a daughter.  Also shown/mentioned are C.R. Evans, who appears to have worked for the Overseas Division of General Motors and a J.S. Porter.  These films include footage of college graduations, a class reunion of Smith College, a family reunion,  trips including a sailing trip to Bermuda, Phillip's Grandparents, and a speech by Franklin Roosevelt before he became President.   The footage of Franklin Roosevelt was taken from just a few feet away from him.  This has to have a great value to the J.P. Evans family and we would like to put the films back into their hands.  The family appears to have lived in CT, then in MO, and then in Hagerstown, PA.  However the films were found in Tucson, AZ, so perhaps J.P. Evans retired and died in AZ.   If you belong to this family or know of this family, please contact Gene Essman.
