Gauge: Basketweave rows 1-3 = 7” x 1”

Trellis stitch rows 1-4 = 7” x 1”

Basketweave

Ch 32

Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 2, turn. (30 dc

counting the turning ch)

Row 2: Skip the first dc, (fpdc in each of the next 4 dc, bpdc in each of the

next 4 dc) 3 times, fpdc in each of the last 4 dc; hdc in the top of the

turning ch; ch 2, turn. (30 sts)

Row 3: (Fpdc in each of the next 4 sts, bpdc in each of the next 4 sts) 3

times, fpdc in each of the last 4 dc; hdc in the top of the turning ch; ch 2,

turn. (30 sts)

Row 4: (Bpdc in each of the next 4 sts, fpdc in each of the next 4 sts) 3

times, bpdc in each of the last 4 dc; hdc in the top of the turning ch; ch 2,

turn. (30 sts)

Row 5: Repeat row 4

Row 6: Repeat row 3

Row 7: Repeat row 3

Row 8: Repeat row 4

Rows 9-32: (Repeat rows 5-8) 6 times

Rows 33-34: Repeat rows 5-6. Fasten off. Weave in ends.


Trellis Stitch

(As far as I know, this is my original method for doing this trellis stitch, so if

you have a problem email me.)

Ch 30

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, (ch 5, skip next 3 ch’s, sc in the next

ch) 7 times; ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Working in front of the ch loops on the previous row, sc in the first

sc, (dc in each of the next 3 skipped ch’s, sc in the next sc) 7 times; ch 1,

turn.

Row 3: Sc in the first sc, ch 3, skip next dc, insert hook under the next ch 5

loop on row 1 AND into the next dc on the previous row, complete sc; (ch 5,

skip next 3 sts on the previous row, insert hook under the next ch 5 loop

AND into the next dc on the previous row, complete sc) 6 times, ch 3, skip

next st, sc in the last sc; ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Working in front of the ch loops on the previous row, sc in the first

sc, dc in the skipped st, sc in the next sc, (dc in each of the next 3 skipped

sts, sc in the next sc) 6 times, dc in the next skipped st, sc in the last sc; ch

1, turn.

Row 5: Insert hook under the first ch 3 loop AND into the first sc on the

previous row, complete sc; (ch 5, skip next 3 sts on the previous row, insert

hook under the next ch 5 loop AND into the next dc on the previous row,

complete sc) 6 times, ch 5, skip next 3 sts on the previous row, insert hook

under the last ch 3 loop AND into the last sc, complete sc; ch 1, turn.

Rows 6-49: (Repeat rows 2-5) 11 times.

Rows 50-52: Repeat rows 2-4

Row 53: Insert hook under the first ch 3 loop AND into the first sc on the

previous row, complete sc; (sc in each of the next 3 sts, insert hook under

the next ch 5 loop AND into the next dc on the previous row, complete sc) 6

times, sc in each of the next 3 sts, insert hook under the last ch 3 loop AND

into the last sc, complete sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.


For both totes

Make 2 of these facings

Ch 30

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across; ch 1,

turn. (29 sc)

Row 2: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn.

Rows 3-12: Repeat row 2. Do not ch 1 or turn at the end of row 12. Fasten

off. Weave in ends.

Handle

Ch 200; join with a sl st to the 1st ch, being careful not to twist chain.

Round 1: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in each remaining ch around; join

with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (200 dc)

Round 2: Sl st in each dc around; join with a sl st to the first sl st. Fasten

off.

Round 3: Join yarn with a sl st in the foundation of any beginning ch, sl st in

each foundation ch around; join with a sl st to the first sl st. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Closure Strap

Ch 28

Row 1: Trc in the 4th ch from hook and in each remaining ch across; ch 1,

turn.

Row 2: Sl st in each trc, 3 sl st in the turning ch, sl st in each of the

foundation chains; fasten off, leaving a 12” tail for sewing.

Bookmark

Ch 30; fasten off leaving a 12” tail for sewing.


Assembly

Illustration 1

Lay each of the blue facing pieces over each end of the wrong side of the

yellow book cover; pin in place. Sc (shown in red) around the entire

perimeter of the book cover, working through both the cover and facing on

the ends as shown in illustration 1; join with a sl st to the first sc, then

continue around working a sl st in each sc around; join with a sl st to the

first sl st. Fasten off. Sew the bookmark to one side of the center of the

cover as illustrated by the green dot.

Arrange the pink handle as shown in illustration 2 and tack to the cover in

the 6 places indicated by green. Sew the button in the center of the cover,

1” from one edge, as illustrated in red. Sew the end of the purple closure

strap to the center of the cover, 1” from the edge opposite the button,

as illustrated in blue. Weave in all ends. Insert book covers in the facings.

Pull closure strap over and button between any 2 trc to close. (This makes

the closure adjustable to accommodate most any size paperback book.)
