All other voyages of the Marianne: Mysteries of the Ship Marianne

I, Carl Wieting, Master of the ship Marianne of Bremen, do solemnly swear that the annexed list contains the names of all the passengers who have been taken on board the said ship at Bremen or any other foreign port at sea and brought in the said vessel into any district of the United States since her departure from the said port of Bremen.

Signed this Sept. 1843

C. Wieting

Passengers of the Ship Marianne

Welcome to a puzzle of history! It begins in the late summer of 1843 when the ship Marianne began a special voyage from Bremen in Prussia, sailing for the port of Baltimore, Maryland in the United States. The ship's Master, crew and about 185 passengers spent 45 days at sea, arriving in Baltimore on September 25, 1843 [not September 7, 1843].

What made this voyage notable? Most of the passengers were neighbors on farms in and around the small town of Melle, in the Kingdom of Hannover, Prussia. Melle is located near present-day Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany. Today we are still trying to learn why so many neighboring families simultaneously boarded a ship in 1843 to move half-way around the world. Their destination was a wild frontier full of danger. This happened well before the major migrations from Germany between the 1850's and 1880's.

It is almost as if a group of neighboring engineers today decided to leave their homes, board a space shuttle, and fly together to settle a colony on the Sea of Crises on the moon. No one could have known that this trickle of brave pioneers would later swell to a tidal wave of immigrants so large that it changed the whole world. Now we are looking for descendants of the passengers, and also for family members who remained, or returned, to the Melle area.

The following passenger list for the Marianne is beautifully hand written and is clear and easy to read. This transcript attempts to be faithful to the list maker's original spelling even when it appears to be wrong. A matching website, Mysteries of the Marianne, provides details that attempt to solve many interesting questions raised by this passenger list. Please help solve the many remaining mysteries surrounding the courageous people who sailed on the Marianne in 1843!

Special website note: One Hannebaum son, Wilhelm, age between 1 and 7, is known to have sailed to America with his family, and indeed, the name "Wilhelm" appears at the end of the Hannebaum family list. However, the list maker apparently came upon another Wilhelm immediately thereafter, and accidentally omitted the Wilhelm named Hannebaum. On the original list, there is only one No. 34, Wilhelm Hempe from Merkendorf, age 25. This is a fascinating and hopefully rare type of error found on this handwritten list. Apparently there were 186 passengers instead of 185!

MARIANNE PASSENGER LIST FOOTNOTES / FUSSNOTE

Last Places of Residence & Destinations of Marianne Passengers

The largest group of Marianne passengers -- more than 27% -- simply listed "Wetter" as their last place of residence. There are 3 villages named "Wetter" in Germany (one in Nordrhein-Westfalen; another in Hessen; and a third in Niedersachsen). The last place of residence for the folks from Wetter on board the Marianne was Wetter (Melle) in Niedersachsen, near Osnabrück.

A review of the last places of residence named by the other Marianne passengers is interesting. Most of the rest of the passengers were also recruited from villages in and around Wetter. Perhaps recruiters from the ship company, or sales agents from a land company in the US, or leaders motivated by some unifying event, canvassed this area and successfully signed up many families to sail on this specific voyage. Why did so many people respond?

A review of the destinations is also interesting because more than 51% of all passengers on the Marianne said that "Cincinatty" (Ohio) was their destination. Another 30% listed "Pitsburg" (Pennsylvania). This appears to be an organized effort with leadership, yet we don't know who the leaders were. Each of the other destinations was listed by less than 5% of the remaining passengers, including 4.3% who said they were headed for Indiana.
