GENERAL INFORMATION
The Vanderbilt Planetarium is Long Island's largest public planetarium,
and has been in operation since 1971. The Planetarium's Sky Theater contains
a Goto Planetarium projector (nicknamed "George") capable of projecting 11,369
stars on the 60-ft dome. This is the same number of stars visible to the
human eye under the darkest skies. Outside of the Sky Theater, you will find
space-related exhibits in the planetarium lobby. You can find out what
you might weigh on other planets, and even take a close-up look at the
moon.
Friday nights even offer an opportunity to view the real night
sky though the planetarium's telescopes.
Laser shows have not been shown at the Planetarium for well over 5 years
and there are no plans to have them return to the Planetarium.
A variety of sky shows are offered for all ages. Two live lectures
are offered each weekend: A Trip to the Planets designed for children
under 7, and Wonders of the Seasonal Sky for the entire family.
The feature shows, "Mars Adventure" and
"Eclipse" are recommended for ages 12 and up.
Weekdays, September through June, the planetarium theater is reserved
for school groups. If you are a teacher interested in bringing your
class, please check out the following school
information, and feel free to contact the planetarium for further
information.
Also be sure to check out the Planetarium gift shop, where you will find
an array of astronomy books, posters, T-shirts, and other space-related items.
