FollyWorld Scene 2

Scene 110
written by Lilpeste

It's the morning of the big stockholders meeting; all the players are gathering in the main conference room at Spaulding Enterprises; Blake and Alan-Michael are chatting in a corner...

Blake: I think I finally figured it out this morning, but I don't know what good it will do you now. (hands A-M a note)

A-M: Is this for real? (she nods) Hmm...

Blake: What are you thinking?

A-M: I don't think Dad's going to be happy, but it could make life very interesting.

Blake: I was thinking the same thing...

As more people take their seats, we cut to Holly's hospital room at Cedars...

Dr. Sedwick: Holly, you and MJ look terrific. I've signed your discharge papers.

Holly: Thank you, Margaret. (Margaret smiles and leaves as Meredith enters)

Meredith: I wanted to look in on that beautiful niece of mine. She told me earlier that she wants to be taken home in a limo.

Holly: (laughs, looking down at her daughter) Demanding already? (looks up at Meredith) Well, don't go spoiling her too much, Auntie Meredith.

Meredith: (smiles) Fletcher's preparing things for her now. He told me to tell you that your mom is insisting on staying with you both for the first couple of weeks. She said Ed will be ok without her.

Holly: Hmm... didn't she just move out and already she's coming back. You try to get them to leave the nest, but...

Meredith: (laughs) You're lucky to have so many people who care about you, Holly.

Holly: Wild. I remember a time when it seemed like no one cared...

As Holly's thoughts drift off, we cut to WSPR; Roger is sitting at his desk, looking at a picture of Holly that he keeps in the right hand drawer of his desk, the drawer he keeps locked...

Roger: Why do I still miss you so much? (his phone rings) Yes? (listens) Sure, send him in...

Roger puts the picture back in the drawer and locks it up; he stands to greet his visitor. Mr. Varney, a distinguished European gentleman in his mid-40s, opens the door and extends his hand to Roger...

Ian: Hello Mr. Thorpe, my name is Ian Varney. I appreciate you seeing me.

Roger: What can I do for you? (they shake hands and then both sit down)

Ian: I'm here on behalf of a small group of European businessmen. They are aware of the trouble your station has been experiencing.

Roger: Uh-huh. I bet they are...

Ian: (ignoring Roger's attitude) They'd like to make you an offer for the station.

Roger: Well, Ian, that's very nice of them, but the station is not for sale.

Ian: It's a shame about the loss of credibility you experienced after that erroneous newscast. That's going to be hard to recover from, don't you think? Surely it'd be easier to start fresh someplace else.

Roger: Surely it would Ian, but I'm not one to take the easy way out. This station means a great deal to me... holds a lot of memories. So I repeat, it's not for sale.

Ian: I hope you don't come to regret your decision.

Roger: That's not a threat by any chance?

Ian: (smiles) Just a friendly warning. Here's my card when you change your mind. (places it in front of Roger)

Roger: (lets it sit there) I believe you mean "if".

Ian: I know what I meant. (smiles) Good day. (leaves)

Roger: (frowns) Easy for you to say... (dials an extension) Gilly, please come in here. (Gilly enters)

Gilly: Yes, Roger?

Roger: I have a research assignment for you. ASAP, I want Gilroy out as anchor. His credibility is shot. What we need is someone with unquestionable integrity. I want you to find that person, call a headhunter if you need to, but find that person and bring them to this station pronto. Ok?

Gilly: Fine.

Roger: And one more thing...

Gilly: Yes?

Roger: I really need your help with this. Please double check... triple check everything that goes out over the air. Someone is trying to sabotage us. We need to be careful.

Gilly: (sees the look of genuine concern in Roger's eyes) I'll put everyone on alert to be extra careful.

Roger: But don't tell them why.

Gilly: Ok. Thanks for confiding in me Roger.

Roger: I trust you, Gilly.

Gilly: I won't let you down. (Roger nods and she leaves)

Roger: Who are you and why this station?

As Roger begins to formulate a plan of action, we return to the Spaulding board meeting...

Alan: (dreading his inevitable loss of power) The next item on the agenda is the announcement of the result of the vote for the presidency. Mrs. Whitney, from the accounting firm of Deloitte and Touche, will announce the result. (as she stands to speak, she hands him a copy of the vote; the blood drains from his face and he swallows hard)

Mrs. Whitney: 1,960 votes for Alan Spaulding, 2,035 votes for Amanda Spaulding; 2035 represents 51%; therefore, the new president of Spaulding Enterprises is Ms. Amanda Spaulding.

Alan turns to look at his daughter; on her ice cold expression, we fade to black...
