Scene 88 "Are you worried about this appointment?" Ross smiles at his wife and takes her hand in his; they are sitting in the waiting room of Dr. Sedwick's office. The OB/GYN is running late because of a complicated C-section earlier that morning and Blake has been staring off into space, worrying her husband... Blake: What? (pauses) Yeah, I guess I am now that you mention it. But that actually wasn't what I was thinking about. Ross: Oh. A penny for them? Blake: I was thinking about the past. Ross: That certainly gives me plenty of room to guess... Blake: I don't know. Seeing Phillip and Alan-Michael together brought back all these memories. And now, sitting here, I can't help but remember the time I pretended to be pregnant. What if this is some kind of karmic retribution? Ross: Sweetheart, we all make mistakes when we're young. I don't think this is any sort of divine punishment. In fact, we don't know that anything's wrong. Blake: We know I'm not pregnant. I don't know. I was talking to Meredith the other day (stops) Oh my god... Meredith. Ross: What about Meredith? Blake: She doesn't know. "Excuse me. I'm looking for Dr. Rick Bauer. Do you know where I might find him?" Meredith Reade makes one last mark on her patient's chart and turns to look up into the face of Phillip Spaulding. They stare at each other in shock. Meredith: (trying to recover, but unable to take her eyes off Phillip) Rick? I think he went that way. (points absentmindedly down the hall toward the cafeteria) Phillip: (shaken, quietly) Meredith, what are you doing here? Meredith: (unsure how to answer) My job. I work here. I'm a doctor. That hasn't changed. Phillip: I mean... oh nevermind. Meredith: I could ask you the -- "Phillip, what's taking you so long? Lizzie and I were wondering if Rick decided to operate on you." Phillip: (his eyes still on Meredith, mustering a smile and lighthearted tone) Scary thought. I've heard that can be dangerous to your health. Meredith: (looks sadly at Lizzie for a few moments, then notices Beth and then locks eyes for a moment with Phillip; both remembering the child they lost...) If you'll excuse me, I have to see a patient. As Meredith walks determinedly down the hall, wondering if this day could get any worse and feeling both Phillip's and Beth's eyes boring into her back..... "I'm sorry, but you're going to have to be patient. These things don't happen overnight." At Dr. Sedwick's advice, Blake frowns and Ross draws her closer to him... both sad to again receive a negative lab result.... Blake: What if we're waiting for nothing? What if there's something wrong with me? Dr. S: We have nothing to indicate there's anything wrong. It's probably nothing that some relaxation, time and nature can't handle. You just need to relax and have some fun with it. Ross: We have been trying for a while. When do you recommend that couples get tested? I mean, it can't hurt, can it? Dr. S: Well, technically it's a little early yet. You haven't been trying that long. Blake: (tears in her eyes) Please. Dr. S: (looking from husband to wife) If you're sure that's what you want, I'll arrange it. Dr. Sedwick walks them to the door, and as Blake and Ross pass into the waiting room, they see Holly and Fletcher kissing in a corner... Blake: (trying to be upbeat) Do all people in their third trimester kiss like that? Holly: (pulling away from Fletch a little and pretending to pout) Are you criticizing our technique? Holly looks at her daughter intently trying to figure out what else to say. Blake shakes her head almost imperceptibly and Holly goes to hug her. Blake: (her voice muffled as she buries her head in her mother's shoulder) We've got to get going. Holly: I love you, sweetheart. Blake: I love you too. (pulls away and puts her hand on her mother's stomach) You, too, little one. And one of these days I hope you'll have an oddly-close-to-your-age little niece or nephew to play with. Holly and Ross: It's going to happen. As Blake and Ross leave the room, Holly stares after them, tears glistening in her eyes. Fletcher comes up behind her and gently puts his arms around her... she leans her head back against his sturdy shoulder... Fletch: You are an amazing mother. "I miss you, Mom."
"I still miss her too." Michelle turns to see her father standing in the doorway. Michelle: You do? Ed: (nodding) I think of all the things she did, how she made me laugh. Sometimes how she made me cry. And I look at you, and I wish so badly sometimes that she were here to see what an amazing young woman you've turned into. (pauses) And to give me advice. Your mom was definitely good at advice. Michelle: I didn't know. I mean, I guess I thought with Eve....(her voice trails off) Ed: Eve will always have a special place in my heart. But Mom does too. And if one day I should fall in love again, then that woman will too... That's the amazing thing about hearts. Michelle: What? Ed: They have so much room for love. And loving someone new doesn't mean you stop caring for the people in your past. Michelle: (her thoughts drift back to last summer...) I have to go now, Dad. (walks past him down the stairs without so much as a glance back) Ed: (watches her leave; walks over to the picture and holds it in his hands) I could really use some of that advice right about now. (hears the door slam shut downstairs) Yep, could really use some... We hear another door slam as Alan marches into his mansion.... Amanda: (looking up from her magazine as her father pours himself a stiff drink) Anything I can do? Alan: No, Amanda. It's business. But thanks for offering. Alan stares out the window downing his drink in silence; off Amanda's reaction we fade to black... Comments? Suggestions? Write us!
