Church in Michigan
Western Michigan residents with MCS may be interested in a church with a fragrance free policy. Tim Mainka sent me an email about this. They have filed a lawsuit in order to get permits to build an environmentally-safe church.

NEW: Ethyl Cyanocrylate poisoning
Hello, My father was exposed to ethyl cyanocrylate (ECA) while Krazy glueing something. Does anyone know anything about ECA poisoning and treatment or can you refer me to any local doctors (in the San Francisco Bay Area who accept MediCare or MediCal preferably, but not necessarily), groups, or individuals who could help us learn more about ECA? He's been to a doctor and talked to Poison Control and neither were any help. He's been sick for nearly 2 weeks and is to be getting worse. Any information or references you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Travlin
ps if you could please email me directly that would nice. I'm not sure how often I'll be able to check all the message boards I'm posting on. sushhi@yahoo.com

RE: ECA
This may be helpful: http://www.inchem.org/documents/cicads/cicads/cicad36.htm which says, " A number of studies, both case reports and workplace surveys, have been reported in which occurrences of asthma have also been linked to exposure to ECA and/or MCA. The available information does not allow conclusions to be drawn regarding whether asthma was induced by an allergenic or an irritation mechanism. In many of the bronchial challenge tests, it seems that the challenge concentrations involved were directly irritant."

Help - children have chemical sensitivity
We just found out that our children are chemically sensitive. I need some suggestions as to what kind of laundry detergent is safe to use. What about cleaners? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Debbi, I have started using products from a company called Melaleuca. They manufacture a large line of products that do not contain bleach, ammonia, phosphates, formaldehyde, chlorine or lye. Since switching I have not had a single asthma attack. My husband and my two sons also are sensitive and are able to use their lotions which took care of their excema. Feel free to contact me for more info mtisler@yahoo.com.

Treatment?
I've been getting much worse the past couple of years with my reaction to perfumes, lotions, and scents in general. I've never been to a doctor about the problem. IS there any treatment for the condition? It's gotten to the point that my husband has to do the grocery shopping and I'm pretty much homebound. Any info would be appreciated. I live in Texas.

looking for healthy vacation spots
I suffered a chemical industry several years ago while working at a college. Since then, I have become sensitive to many products, and of course dust. I live in a suburb of Philadelphia. Our family is planning a trip to Virginia (Charlottesville, Williamsburg) and North Carolina (Chapel Hill) this summer. We’d also like to stop along the coast of North Carolina around New Bern, Cape Lookout or perhaps the Outer Banks, while we are there. Do you know of any safe healthy hotels, inns, places to stay. Any help would be most greatly appreciated. Stephie ssaul@pcv.org

NEW:Non-Toxic Home
My name is Ronna Secker and I am a registered nurse in Tucson. I have a wellness practice and educate people regarding safe, options for health challenges. The technologies that I work with are mentioned in Dr. Rubin's book, THE MAKER'S DIET. In the back of the book, Dr. Rubin has a section on safe alternatives that he knows about and recommends. Under the NON-TOXIC HOME, the technologies I speak of are mentioned under Air Purification, Organic Sleep Bedding, and the Water Purification Systems. I work with those with MCS in addition to other challenges, and would be happy to provide support and information. I work with wellness consultants all over the world who, like myself, have a mission to help people learn about healthy alternatives such as magnetics, far-infrared, nutrition, negative ions, etc. I would be happy to hear from you and help any way I can. In most cases I can locate a wellness consultant in your area whereby you can see these tehnologies in person. Sincerely, Ronna Secker RN 520-544-2135

Thee's an interesting article in the Washingtonian that you can read by going to the following site - www.washingtonian.com/etc/shopping/homedesign/healthierhome.html I am an RN and a wellness consultant with Nikken and would be happy to answer questions about the Nikken products mentioned in this article,ie the PiMag Water, Sleep system, and Air Power Wellness. The person who wrote the article has MCS and fibromyalgia and is a doctor that had to leave her practice. It's quite interesting. Also, the Air Power System mentioned is buy 1 get 1 free with limited supplies. The sleep pad mentioned is also 50% off with limited supplies as well. NEW:Workmans comp is ignoring me
I was subjected twice on 9/8/04 to sprayed chemicals, after advising my manager upon the first incident, she had someone come and spray behind me and over me the second time. I was met with a "bacteria buster" and "mold buster" being poured beneath my desk. I advised the manager and maintence that I could not have this exposure due to sensitivity. A few hours later in the enclosed room, I was feeling very ill, lethargy, confusion and more than anxious and advised my manager that I was feeling ill and that the chemicals from the day before were still in the air. She left work without a word. I found out that night when closing my department that she had two auto sprayers placed in the 7 1/2ft by 12ft office, pointing right at my desk because one went off right above me and I inhaled these chemicals. I ended up with a "high" that I could not come down from, a week and a half prior my doctor put me on xanax due to the stress of this manager. I took 1.75 mg of xanax and 2 tynol pms to get away from the uncontrolled anxiety and "high" as well as the sinus pain. My physician put me in the psychiatric unit the following day because I was a mess. Workmans comp recognizes the sinus problems and then infection, but does not recognize the chemical sensitivity. I have hypo-thyroidism and depression, I know what my body and tolorate and what it cannot. I have sense been terminated from my job because of these issues with the manager, I cannot see the psychiatrist due to not having health benefits any longer and Workmans comp doctor says there is not any relation with the chemicals. I am outraged and seeking legal advice. But I am glad to see that this is not in my mind, I have known for years to stay away from chemicals because of what they do to me.

NEW:MCS and Lupus
MCS is often (but definitely not always) a symptom of Lupus. About 2% of the general population have MCS; about 22% of people with lupus have MCS. If you have other symtoms(especially joint pain or a redrash on bridge of nose and cheeks) or feel all over sick, you migh t want to be checked out by rheumatologist. You can check out symptoms of lupus;there are many. The above is for educational purposes and information sharing only. It is not meant to treat or diagnose anything. I use a vinegar/water solution to clean everything in my house. You can use plain baking soda and vinegar combination to do laundry. Borax can be used for cleaning bathrooms.

RE: NEW
Fragrance free is what is says. Unscented may not be unscented--may have a "masking fragrance"-which is a fragrance over another fragrance. Those are still fragrant at times. Try a co-op or health food store. Look online for fragrance free as they are not available in your typical chains.

NEW: needing help, adivice ...anything
If anyone can help with advice, stories of their own or any help please contact me at sunset2000@hotmail.com. I have allergies, always have but a year ago i was hit with some mystery problem at my work place. I could not work in the room i was in without losing voice, headaches, breathing problesm & chest pains. I was moved...nothing worked. Finally had to leave for gallbladder surgery last May...after surgery i was having terrbile breathing issues. I finally went on a 24 hour allergy pill and summer was ok. Then sept hit, went back to work in another spot and same problems hit! Three weeks later I had to leave. The doctor set up allergy "scartch" tests..that day of that test was the first day I started having tingling tongue and this odd chest heaviness. Then the last 7 months have been a downhill spiral. I am to the point now that SCENTS of any kind make my tongue tingle and some if bad enough will make me so dizzy so quickly I am scared to stand, breathing becomes difficult. I live in PEI, Canada and we do not even have an allergist here. I do have an apt in June! Been waiting 8 months :( I am scared and lost and confused. I can't eat many things now, became allergic to my dogs I have had for THREE years! What is going on with me!!! Has anyone had similiar happen to them? I am told "enviro illness" or "MCS"....I do not recall being exposed to anything knowingly at work, I worked a desk job unless it was in ventalation. I am not fully housebound yet but its getting to be more and more. DOctors think I am stressed, crazy or they do not "know" what is wrong. If I cannot work I cannot survive, cannot keep my home sterile enviornment. If anyone can shed any light on this PLEASE EMAIL ME. I would appreciate ANY help. Leisa

thigs that helped me with MCS
1- get away from city water - use well or rainwater (get away from chlorine, flourides and a fistfull of other surprises)
2- get rid of clothes and wash/dryer machines that have been exposed to regular detergents (cant use washaterias)- buy some new clothes, detox them in baking soda water for a few hours at least, and if you cant afford new machines hand wash with nontoxic detergents. Watch out for "non fragant" labels, sometimes they just mask the fragrances (regular detergent co. new "green" products do this making them actually even more toxic). You want to use companies that never have made regualr detergents.
3- eat properly - processed foods are the worst!no sugar, flour, yeast, alcohol, preservatives, pesticides, hydrogenated, this is a long list, if you want more info email me at andy at ed-austin . com
4- of course avoid toxic chemicals!

RE:
Leisa
I became allergic too after never having allergies. I hope you been getting some info on the internet as to why you have MCS, how to get better and that its not in your head. Very few doctors know how to treat this therefore they don't- treating it like allergies makes it worst. they had me taking hormones (prednisone or such), antibiotics, and wanted to start me in a lengthy allergy treatment. We need to clean our bodies, not add more junk to it. You could have had mold at work or in your house, that's what got me over the edge. But it could have been anything, new mattress, new paint at work, a certain cleaner that you used...its important that you find what triggered it so you can get away from it. I am going to attach below a couple email I sent out in the last couple of days, get back to me if you need more info- don't despair, you can get better but you got to act on it, and its hard when you don't feel good and are scared. I will get this info compiled in my website one day, with useful links. But get ready to make some changes in your life and you will feel better! I now design green homes and sell nontoxic materials, and feel better than I have in years, finally!

Who Opposes Recognition of MCS ?
Who Opposes Recognition of MCS ? (http://www.mcsrr.org/factsheets/mcsrecog.html )
American Academy of Allergy & Immunology (now AAAAI), based on position paper adopted in 1986 American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, based on a 1991 position paper, revised in 1993 Environmental Sensitivities Research Institute since 1995. ESRI is a "non-profit" organization with membership fees of $2,500 to $10,000 per year. The Board of Directors includes representatives of DowElanco, Monsanto, Proctor and Gamble, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association. It is chaired by executive director of RISE, a pesticide industry association opposed to MCS recognition.
