The Lions Club of Pontiac was chartered October 31, 1923. Sponsored by Lions International, the Pontiac Lions received its initial start in Lionism at a Charter Banquet on Thursday, November 23, 1923. Dr. Chester A. Doty, District Governor of the State of Michigan, made the Charter presentation. Through our fund raisers and contributions received during White Cane Week, we are able to make donations to many institutions that provide services to the visually and hearing impaired. Some of these include: Leader Dog for the Blind, Welcome Home for the Blind, Penrickton Center for Blind Children, Michigan Eye Bank, Lions Visually Impaired Youth Camp, Beaumont Silent Children Fund, Madonna University Lions Hearing Fund, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation. Area blind residents enjoy our monthly Bingo for the Blind outings, and other special events planned on their behalf. White canes and other appliances are furnished and kept in good repair. Needy residents are assisted in obtaining eye and hearing checkups and glasses and hearing aids when warranted. Used eyeglasses are collected and turned over for reconditioning and distribution in a third world country. Our Club meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday, September through May. Meetings are held at the Oakland Technical Center/NE, 1371 N. Perry St., at 12:00 noon. Current membership stands at 36.
