Dear Doctor:

i was wondering if you could give me some information about how birth control works inside the female body. Thank you for your time.

============

Dear Patient:

There are many different types of contraception that we prescribe for women for various circumstances. I am assuming that we are talking about birth control pills in this instance. Birth control pills come in many different forms, but all basically do the same thing. They fool your body into believing that it is pregnant by supplementing it with hormones. If the female body believes that it is pregnant, it will not ovulate, thus preventing pregnancy. Birth control pills will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases however, so be safe and use condoms as well if you are sexually active, and as always seek the advice of your own personal physician.

Thanks for writing,

Dear Doctor:

I have a problem, it hurts when I swallow. It's been going on for about a month and a half now, what should I do?
Duane

============

Dear Duane:

There can be many reasons for pain during swallowing. They can range from things as benign as a common cold symptom to much more serious problems. Since this has been going on for some time now, it `s important that you see your personal physician real soon. Should you not have one, you may try any one of the clinics around the Syracuse area, or perhaps the emergency room at your closest hospital. They will examine you and perform certain tests to ascertain what the specific problem is that you have that is causing this discomfort.

Hoping you feel better real soon,

Dear Doctor:
What's the best way to remove a wart on my finger?

Stacy

============

Dear Stacy:

The best over-the-counter wart treatments are the paste type (DUOfilm paste) but that can be difficult to find, so your second choice is the bandaid type. They work best if used nightly, first soak your finger (even just after doing the dishes or showering), pumice or gently scrape off as much callous as you can, then apply the bandaid. If no improvemnet after 1-2 weeks go to your doctor. Warts can be very persistent and being consistent with nightly treatment is important. If the skin feels smooth, but the black dots are still present then the wart is still there. If the area around the wart is turning white or peeling alot you are getting too much of the medicine on the normal skin, skip a few nights then next time protect the normal skin with a coat of vaseline before applying the medicine. Also, if the area is becoming red, swollen, or hot it may be infected...go see your doctor.
