The E. Porter Alexander Camp No 158 Augusta Ga, Sons of Confederate Veterans: The official SCV Hunley Camp Mission Accomplished!
The Sons of Confederate Veterans Official CSS H.L. Hunley Project congratulates the Naval Historical Department and Dr. Robert Neylund for the safe recovery of the CSS H.L. Hunley on August 8th, 2000. Now the journey has been completed! The Project also pays tribute to the man who spent 23 years searching for the submarine, the man who led the SCV-USC-NUMA search for thirteen days in 1994, and the man who actually found the submarine on September 14th, 1994: Writer, Degreed Archaeologist, Adventurer, Discoverer, Mark M. Newell, Ph.D. Dr. Newell provided us with the following list of people and organizations who contributed to the discovery of the CSS H.L. Hunley since 1972, when he started the project: Edgar Greiner, Lee Downing, Charles Rheinhart, Tommy Thompson, the four who began the project in 1972. State Senator Col. John Amasa May, who paved the way for SCV National support for the project in 1973 Odus Francis, Norm Barnett, who helped with the first computer studies. E.I.Dupont Nemours Co who provided computer facilities, The Augusta Chronicle, CSRA Camperland Inc. of Augusta. Tony L. Carr Sr. and Wood Highsmith, officers of the E. Porter Alexander Camp No 158 of Augusta. The entire membership of the E. Porter Alexander Camp No 158 of Augusta, who constantly voted funds and support for the project from the camp’s inception until 1994. Ms. Betsy Bloomer and fellow members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy for loyalty and support, moral and financial. Artist Larry Arnold of Cayce, SC who helped with fund raising projects. The following participated in training sessions for the 13 day field project at the end of the search (Cussler wrote the check for it, his only involvement): Nick Nichols, Savannah Ga.
