MOLLY IVINS (To the tune of "Holly Holy", a Top 10 song for Neil in 1969.)
Molly Ivins, I,
Molly Ivins writes,
(Write!) Write a column.
Read her stuff about political types,
And they fly.
Molly Ivins, I just love,
The story behind this one: This song is about a Texas-based newspaper writer named Molly Ivins. I became acquainted with her through her first two books, "Molly Ivins Can't Say That, Can She?" and "Nothin' But Good Times Ahead". And I'm reading her third one, "You Got To Dance With Them What Brung You", in December 1999 - word has it that my copy of this book and Neil Diamond spent time inside the same hotel at the same time in Wilkes-Barre, PA, on December 12! Her newspaper column, which originates at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, is syndicated to several newspapers, including two in my area, The Record of Montgomery County, PA, and The Philadelphia Daily News. On April 16, 1996, I had the pleasure of hearing her speak in a town near where I live called Cheltenham, and she was even more enchanting live and in person. (Kind of reminds me of my reaction to a certain fellow named Neil Diamond in this regards.) One reason Molly Ivins appeals to me is that I am a liberal Democrat, and her writings also reflect a liberal point of view. Although you will not find me writing the praises of Rush Limbaugh and other conservative writers and broadcasters, I have included some links to politically-oriented parodies of Neil Diamond songs that were done by conservatives on the Hot Doggest Night Home Page.
