SWEET TANGERINE
Parody by Lea Ann and Chip Hays
(To the tune of "Sweet Caroline", a Top Five song for Neil in 1969.)
When it began
The tree began a growin
And oh the craving was so strong
It's like an orange
But it tastes so much juicier
And that is why I sing this song
Up
Reachin' up
Pickin one
Eatin' it
Not that bad
Sweet Tangerine
Nothin else could taste as good
It's very fine
In fact it sure beats eating wood
Wood's not good
Liverwurst sucks
Or so my friends have told me
Broccoli's never been my fave
Brussel sprouts bite
I've got the scars to prove it
There's only one food I can crave
Ripe
This one's ripe
This one's not
Oh who cares?
We'll make pie
Sweet Tangerine
Nothin else could taste as good
It's very fine
In fact it is my favourite food
Sweet Tangerine
Nothin' else could taste as good
It's very fine
If you've not had one then you should...
SWEET TAN GER INE!!!
The story behind this one:
This parody was written by a Lea Ann Hays, a Neil Diamond fan in Iowa who shares his January 24 birthday, and her brother Chip Hays. Lea Ann says, "My brother and I happen to be WILDLY nuts over the Dr. Demento show and I told him that we HAD to write some parodies and get on that show. I know a whole buncha Neil songs on the guitar and his first thought was 'Sweet Tangerine' so we kicked around that idea for awhile and then eventually wrote it together."
The second word in the title of this one is meant to be pronounced "tanger INE", not "tanger een". And "food" in the line "In fact it is my favourite food" should rhyme with "good".
